My pride and joy had a wee tip last night (damn frost), and the bags are out. What is the best and cheapest way of replacing them?

There's no cheap way to replace them unfortunately, they're not exactly something you'd find in a breakers yard (that you'd trust I mean). Generally they're not a part you'd find stocked in parts warehouses as they're explosives. Also, if the airbags deployed the damage is probably considerable. Parts of the dash, front seatbelts and pretensioners will need to be replaced too. And that's in addition to the damage to the car itself. Oh, and maybe the deceleration/crash sensors.

This ain't going to be cheap :( What make/model is your car?

    2003 Polo 9n 1.4 TDi.

A wee bit of chassis damage, and the front frame that is attached to the chassis is completely in bits. Rad needs replacing and the gear box landed on a concrete box. Haven't it on the lift yet, but it's not looking cheap.

    What are your thoughts?

    wee tip

Doesn't sound so wee... It sounds like it could be a write off / uneconomical to repair.

How many air bags went off? Also many car makers want you to replace the ECU that controls the air bags too.

must be close to being a write off...Ive known cars written off with virtually no damage but air bags depoyed.

My mrs whacked the car recently and the airbags deployed in the passat, new wing, grill, bumper headlight etc.. damage not too bad but the bill turned into €7,689.00 the airbags dash tensioners etc were more than half of the outlay, car was valued at 13k but they would not write it off

Ah jeez, no you're scaring me...

Driver's bag, passenger's bag, and passenger's seat bag...

    That's most likely a write-off, sorry :(

Even if you're going to have it repaired, no one will ever touch that car again. Might as well write it off now and buy something else. Or how about the new scrappage scheme?

'03 Polo? Yup, write off. Get on to your insurance company fast.

Seat bags = new seat covers needed as well, seatbelt pre-tensioners may need checking or replacing if they're fitted (I'd guess they are if you've seat bags). On a 6 year old car it can't be worth it.

It takes a relatively serious whack to deploy bags, I've been crashed in to by a motorbike and shunted some distance by a LWB Transit in the same car and none of the 6 bags blew either time.

Few months ago we had a 2006 Saab 9-3 1.8i Linear Sport written off because of light front damage but the bags had gone off (driver & passenger, not seat or curtain).

Exterior damage was a new bumper and bonnet with no engine damage.

I'm afraid by the sounds of it, the polo is a definate gonner.

Sounds like it's now "quality used spares" to me.

Depends on company, but I've read policy documentation which states "60%" which that just scrapes in under.
