FAS course and fuel allowance

I started a FAS course in October after being on the dole for 15 months. I applied for fuel allowance just before I started the course. I rang social welfare asking where was my fuel allowance as I had heard no word about it and I just recently filled up the oil tank.

The social welfare told me I am not entitled to fuel allowance as I am doing a FAS course:eek:
I don't get petrol allowance for my course eventhough it's costing me money in petrol every week and I only get 80c a day meal allowance but this won't even buy you a cup of tea.
How does the government expect people on FAS courses to live - I would be financially better off to just sit on the dole instead of doing a course :(

If you were entitled to it before you should still be entitled to it now. speak to your instructor at FÁS or citizens information.

When you go on a Fas course (or BTEA for that matter) you keep any entitlement to secondary benefits (including fuel allowance) which you already have. Unfortunately, it seems to be the case that if your required qualifying time is up just before the Fas course and you make the application for the fuel allowance but are switched to the course before your application is processed (and there are big backlogs) then basically they take the view that you didn't already have that secondary entitlement and you are turned down.

If you hear something different, it would be good to know.

Ask your instructor / accounts department in FÁS for a Form F101a - FÁS Trainee application for fuel allowance form. Fill in your details, get FÁS to stamp it and then take it to the Social Welfare office to get them to stamp it. Once they approve it, it will be added to your training allowance. FÁS cannot pay for allowances that were not stamped on your F103 form which you would have gotten stamped before you started the course.
