Ireland were 1 of the nominees and yet after winning the 6 nations, triple crown, grand slam, drawing with the aussies and beating the world champions they go and give it to the england cricketers for winning an egg cup full of ashes over 3 months against australia. BBC what the f***?

why would an Irish team even be nominated for a british sporting award?

Dunno but had a look at it tonight and there was a big feature on Irish rugbys year and we were 1 of the nominees. Maybe caus its an all ireland team and they consider the north part of britain? Just guessing though.

Because a significant amount of people on this island consider themselves British, including (i think) Stephen Ferris, Rory Best and Paddy Wallace.

true but we can still not be described as a british team, by any stretch of the concept

An Irish team has never won it,they just nominate them to satisfy the nordies.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Sports_Personality_Team_of_the_Year_Award

and the only Irish person to ever win the personality award was McGuigan but they considered him British even though he was Irish also he was the only Irish person ever nominated.

Stunningly insightful, high quality debate. Just the kind of thing that really illuminates the rugby forum. Locked.
