im 31 and have been considering getting orthodontic treatment for quite a while, my teeth arent that crooked but there is some overcrowding on the upper arch which made one or 2 teet grow crooked, also you cant really see my upper teeth when I smile as my my upper lip covers them too much, this is something im not happy with but orthtreatment wouldnt help that too much

I have actually has a consultation last year and was told I would need to have surgery to have my upper arch expanded, I was also told that I may have to have surgery on my lower jaw to bring it back a bit so that my upper teeth sit over my lower teeth

I would like to get this done but im not sure im up for the hardship

im 34 and going into hospital tomorrow to get the palatal (upper arch) expanded by surgery and have wisdom teeth removed, im bricking it but glad im finally getting it done, i kept on putting it off but finally took the plunge, i will be wearing braces for the next year and then im getting to lower jaw shifted forward so all the teeth should close and meet together, so im 3 years older than you, if i was getting it done at 31 it would be all done and dusted so i say go for it, i will post here you to let you know how the surgery went on thurs or fri, im not looking forward to christmas dinner, might have to have soup lol

Thanks very much, have you been wearing an uncomfortable device in prepartion for the surgery, how long have you been wearing it and was it difficult to eat, did you get used to it

hi im just back from the hospital, operation was yesterday and hardly any pain at all as they give you pain killers and stuff but my face was swollen fairly bad and is going down now, i got a week off work but im meeting next tues to see how it goes
i had that device your talking about on in the orthodontists and the surgeon was there at time checking some patients so he said i could take it off and have a less intrusive one on after the surgery, i couldnt breath or swallow nearly with it on, do you have to wear it?, i think its called a palatal expander, now i have a smaller one on that he placed in the roof of my mouth during the surgery and will have to wear for a few weeks, its 10 times better than the bigger one cos you have more room in your mouth and its alot more bearable, i was also told to not chew any food until i meet him again next week, but there is alot of food there i can eat

thanks flowertree, im only at the start of the process there is a gap in my front teeth from the surgery but will have to expand it more with the expander, so should be a few weeks of that and then the braces go on but the surgeon said i might not even need braces, just wait and see but i will need more surgery to move the lower jaw forward,
still swollen from the surgery on tuesday and even have a black eye now but i feel the worst is over

it is possble to get braces, without the surgery element, and still get a great result. Just got my braces off 4 weeks ago, after 22 months, and the result is amazing, I'm 30 btw. Hadn't got major issues, just overcrowding mainly. The first ortho I consulted with insisted I get the jaw surgery that you mentioned, said he wouldn't treat me with braces without having the surgery. I wasn't happy with this, and didn't get a good vibe off him (wasn't very friendly and seemed to be irritated by me asking questions!) so I got one more consultation (they're €150 - €200 a pop!). The second guy said I didn't need the surgery (although he could see why the previous ortho recommended it) and said he would get me a perfect result with just the removal of two upper pre-molars. I have to say the result is excellent and the feedback /comments I'm getting are amazing. PM me if you want this guys details. Also, he was a grand cheaper than the other guy
    :)

wow that is an excellent result, i just can wait until the whole process is over, i only had one opinion but i do know i need the lower jaw shifted forward cos there is a massive overbite, i think the orthos have their own ideas of how to do it and the different ways acheive the same results, i think the surgery would decrease the time spent in braces

just an update, i had to go into the hospital every day since tuesday to get the expander tightned, even christmas day, they just tighten it in 5 mins but it has to be done, the gaps between the teeth on the upper row are getting bigger by the day and i could be going to get the braces on by the end of the week, i actually cant wait to get the braces on now and get this expander thing out of my mouth, , out of the pot into the fire lol

totally worth it. I started my treatment when i was 31, im 35 now. took about 2.5 years to complete.didnt require surgery but I did have to wear palate expanders for a good while and get wisdom teeth removed. Had upper (ceramic) and lower (metal). Yes you do feel a bit odd after getting the tracks on , your drawing attention to the very thing youve been hiding.

You get used to it though. Bottom line - totally worth it. nothing like the feeling when you look in the mirror that first time after you get them off, unreal. Im a happier guy no doubt.good luck
