What exactly is backcombed hair?

I often hear people mention backcombed hair. I'm not really sure what it is. Do people do this to give their hair more volume? Doesn't it make the hair frizzy?

Can be quite damaging to hair. Literally take a piece of hair and comb it backwards, towards the root

It does make it sort of frizzy, but usually you put straight hair over it so all you can see is the volume

:eek:Its when you take the strands of hair and push them back towards the root with a comb, its seriously damaging to the hair and if it isnt done right it looks horrible too

Backcombing is used primarily for volume and height. You basically comb / brush sections of your hair back towards the root. But you have to push it down to the root and not leave it thicker at the ends because that's not going to look right!! You smooth down hair over it and voila! you have volume!! It's important to look after your hair with conditioners and treatments because it will damage your hair.
