Software update

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem. Since I got my new mac about 2 months ago, I have been having trouble with the software update function. Im running SnowLeopard on a MBP. My internet function is working fine, but it tells me it cannot make the connection, and then it brings me through network diagnostics, which tells me my internet connection is fine (which i already know!)...so Im back at square one again. It also happens when I try to update the version of iTunes.
Have I got a setting somewhere that is blocking access to the internet or something ? I have looked but havent been able to find anything.
    Anyone got any ideas ?

Do you use Firefox by any chance?

Are you able to connect to the internet using any other app? Does the iTunes store work for example?

    Yeah I do use Firefox.
I do have problems connecting to the iTunes store sometimes, but then it works other times. I dont seem t have a problem with any other application...

    So Safari and that works?

Well it works, but I hate safari. If I changed safari to my default browser would it work ok ?

No, I was just trying to ascertain if it was an issue with the proxy settings. Firefox uses its own proxy settings and sometimes when the system settings are wrong only Firefox will work. It causes a lot of confusion. But if Safari is working that's probably not the problem.

    But have a look in

System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies

and see if auto proxy configuration is ticked. It generally shouldn't be.

After posting earlier, I did try using Safari but was unable to, this is only a recent thing, I used to be able to use it.
Yup, automatic proxies are set for both Firefox and Safari.

Go into system preferences as I described above and uncheck the automatic proxy box. That should fix it.
