Can anyoe give me the statistics (if available!) of how successful direct mailing is for business? Do people actually look at the flyers that come through the door/post?

A far better idea is to get christmas cards made up. e.g

    Christmas Wishings,

    From everybody at Johnson's Laundry...

Include your address. If you are selling something, add your pitch subtley in a line or two and add a number to call. The card will be seen instantly as a gesture rather than a pitch. Plus people put cards up around the house so you get so much more exposure than a leaflet.

How much extra will it cost? It'll be worth it.

I like to save up all the junk mail i get and shove the whole lot through the letterbox of the post office door on christmas eve with a note attached - 'What goes around comes around'. Childish? - Yes. Immensely satisfying? - You can bet your ass.

I would be wary of direct mail campaigns. I know all the junk mail I gets goes straight into the bin, with 1 exception take away menus.

I find that flyers work well for my business. My business is almost 100% 'business to business' and we go out and hand out flyers. It gives us an opportunity to meet potential customers and I often find that we get a call 3 weeks after we've handed out flyers. We also do eshots, telemarketing, newsletters, keep the website updated and have joined BNI. I think its important not to focus on just one aspect of marketing. Each one will bring some business in but you have to keep doing it.

We went to a marketing seminar this week and one of the discussions was about flyers....women look at them and men bin them, thankfully my business is targeted at women!!;)
