    hi

Had a lesson/pre test yesterday, and instructor was drilling it into me about how to sttop properly! I have awful hait of pressing clutch at same time as braking so as not to conk out!! So anyway, he was telling me how to do it and by the end of lesson i was doing it his way. Later on I'm driving, and completley forgot what he was saying.

Cant remember if it was to brake, and then clutch, handbrake and then neutral or clutch, neutral and handbrake!!

Trying to practice loads now but no point if im not even stopping properly!!

    Can anyone help please???

    I think you're overthinking it!

When you are going along, and want to stop, press the brakes and slow right down (don't press the clutch yet). When you are about 2/3 metres away from completely stopping, press in the clutch (otherwise the car will start to struggle). When you come to a complete stop, put on the handbrake, put the car in neutral, and take your foot off the brake (if you are only stopping for a few seconds you don't necessarily need to use the handbrake).

Remember, the handbrake is the first thing you do when you stop, and the last thing you do before you go again. E.g, when you are about to pull off, select 1st gear and then release the handbrake, in that order.

Assuming that you are already in 2nd gear!

so does this appply all the time? I thought instructor said not to bother going down the gears when stopping!!

If you are coming to a complete stop, for example, at a stop sign. You may stop in what ever hear you are in at the time, which will probably be 4th.
However if your prefer changing down through the gears, ie 4th, 3rd, 2nd, stop it's perfectly acceptable to do this for test purposes.
You can use either way, the first option would probably be the best when you are coming to a stop. The handbrake and neutral.

Also if youre coming up on traffic lights which have been red for some time you are better off to pop it into 2nd so that you can keep going should they change in your favour as you approach.

Use the foot brake then shift down the gear's one by one, and finally stop in 2nd gear, press the clutch in as you slow down.
Keep your foot on the brake and leave it in 2nd with the clutch pressed in.
    Engage handbrake, select neutral.

Don't forget to do your observation's before you begin to slow down.

There's no need to shift down the gears, just stop in the gear you're in. Years ago, everyone was taught to change down thru the gears when stopping because braking systems weren't as good as they are today, but modern cars are capable of stopping safely without having to change down.

Just brake progressively in whatever gear you're in, then press the clutch down about a cars lenght before stopping.
