I see you took my advice on the Peter Canavan thread Corcaioch;).

Always felt it was such a pity that he was in his prime when Kerry weren't firing on all cylinders for a few years.

"That" sideline against the dubs will always live long in the memory but then I saw Johnny Doyle do the same thing to Limerick in the Gaelic grounds 2 years ago and it was never spoken of at all. Just as good imo.

mores the pity that gombeen paidi treated him so badly during the latter stages of his kerry career.

As skilful a player as I have ever seen. Doesn't mean he's the best though! By the time he got to the end of his career, being the most natural and skilful player in the country was not enough to get a regular game for his county. We could all name countless players from around the country in the same boat. No passengers in teams anymore, even if they can pop up with scores on a regular basis.

Best player I've ever seen I think, certainly had an amazing array of attributes but his ability to stay cool and influence games despite being watched as closely as he was sets him apart.

The likes of Canavan and John McDermott were outstanding too but I'd go for Fitzgerald

Maurice Fitzgerald was both the most skilful AND best footballer I ever saw.

People often miss out on the fact that he had nerves of steel and always produced on the big day.

The comment above about "passengers" really boggles the mind. He was well worth his place on the team when Paidi was only bringing him on late in games (especially if they were in trouble) and Maurice proved it by being awarded the club footballer of the year in Kerry that year.

watched the 97 highlights there over the weekend. sheer class. points 3, 4 and 5 were amazing from him and then point 9 was surely one of the greatest ever scored in an all ireland final. it was as good, if not better than the one against dublin but because the cameras never got it from the other side of the pitch, nobody saw how go it was....

2 all irelands is a poor return, but with a little luck he could have got one in 98 and was such a shame he wasnt there to pull one out of the fire in 2002 when we needed one score in 25 minutes to win a game that we should never have lost.

Your not exactly comparing like with like there now:D

A toss up for me between Fitz and Mikey Sheehy strictly on a skills basis.

Jacko, Dara, Seamus, Pat Spillane and Fitz in that order as the greatest Kerry players I have seen playing in my life-time.
