New Opel Astra

I visited an Opel dealership today in advance of the release of the Opel Astra to have a look.

I saw an SC and an SE. I must say I am more than impressed with the SE with the optional alloy wheel package.

The half leather is brilliant and has two tone stichting. The underneath of the lower dash around the gear knob and electric handbrake has red led's running under it and the same behind the door handle on the interior.

The Xenons are not available on the Elite as standard but can be added for €1200. The bluetooth is also not standard and can be added at €302.

The boot has a boot tray which can be raised or lowered to 3 different levels.

Its a mini insignia but a lot nicer looking in my opinion.

Im serious considering telling the new boss to buy me one when I meet him next week if he doesn't swing for the Octavia VRs.

Am in the same boat Berty was in an Elite this morn and was very impressed with it. Don't useually go for leather but liked it in this car. Am test driving the elite and the SRi on Monday and hopefully the dealer can come down to the price I want with Xenons in cluded I'll have to get bluetooth as well :(

I'm looking at the 2.0ltr diesel engine with 160ps

Test drive will then bring it down to the choice between the Astra and the vRS

They only pushed the two cars into the showroom this morning and he had no Demo's. They were arriving later today.

I might go back Tuesday when he is not so busy. I would imagine, for his sake, that he could be busy tomorrow being the official release.

Am I right in presuming the new Opel Astras destined for Ireland will all be manufactured by Vauxhall Ellesmere Port?

From recent pictures on Boards.ie the cars were on a transporter travelling through the UK so I assume they are.

Somebody will confirm this Im sure.

I'd say you are, judging by the big song and dance Vauxhall have been making about producing the car in Britain.

Check the VIN at aa dealership. The range SA-SM is UK and SN-ST or WA-WO will be Germany. Opel Germany is in the W range AFAIK

Made you feel important Im sure. You will get the same discount as anybody else but:

I asked the dealer why his price and a nearby Opel dealers price were way out. The more expensive dealer refused to match or even beat his price. He said that they get audited by Opel and if they provide everything with full marks they are allowed greater movement on their margins.

If true, hopefully your Opel dealer is a good Opel dealer.

Sounds like saleman speak to me.

Opel only issue one price list which splits out all the margins etc. According to my sources, the full 2010 list hasn't been released yet - Opel were waiting for the budget.

Sure the dealers know what margins are available though.

He had a specific term for it but I cannot remember it now, 5 pints last night so my memory was stolen. :D

He gave me a full and very concise price list covering the entire Astra range and all the extra's you can have broken down by tax bands.

Basically €2900 off the price of an Elite making it €3000 less than an Elite Insignia by his prices.

Just saw one of them today. The SRi in Red with 19" alloys looked very well. It's tempting all right. Center Console looked a bit messy with all the buttons though

I was told that the 2.0 Diesel is not available at the moment, but will be later in the year.

I think the word is rebate.

Can anyone point me to the price list for Ireland or has it not been released yet? Can't find it anywhere and would like to have a look.

    Thanks!

The salesman didn't tell me that the engine was not available. He gave me prices for a 1.7 but said its only €600 for the 2.0 if I wanted to go for it so I assume its available.

That was not the word he used. He said that each Garage would nearly be slightly different on price because when they are audited by Opel they get points which are rewarded by better margins. I.e( I guess ) they can buy from Opel cheaper.

Rebate may be a suitable word but just not the word he used. I think it started with "M" but I would be all day in a dictionary looking for it.

It works the same with Musgrave(retail industry I work in - not for Musgrave). They audit their brands and give them awards. At the end of the year if you get top marks you get a cheque for around €20,000.

    So something similar I guess.

Was told could have a 2.0 by Jan if I placed an order. The Skoda vRS would take 3 months to come in.

Hmm. I was quoted €24100 for an Elite 1.7TDi yesterday including a €3200 discount. The car was €27300 list

    or €28,000 for the 2.0TDi

So I guess the 2.0TDi from my dealer would be €24,700. Smashing Price!!

Then Xenon for €1125 and bluetooth for €350!

Is the 1.7 in the new astra the same non-common rail carried over from the last generation model (even though its was badged a CDTi)? ....and is it based on an old Isuzu engine that only has 80bhp?

The brochure I have in my hand right now is saying

    Common Rail, multi injection, variable geomertry turbocharger and 16v technology. 1.7 CDTi 16v Versions (110ps & 125PS) and a 160PS 2.0CDTi 16v.

    Blah Blah Blah(direct quote) :D

The 1.7 cdti was upgraded with a common rail injector system in the last generation Astra.

That clears that up! I had a 1.3 diesel of the last version and when i was buying it i always remember that the 1.3 had 10bhp more than the 1.7, but was cheaper!

That must have been after the 3 door model i had was launched

As I also said to the salesman

"It has come a long way since 1998"

Somebody was clearly sacked along the way!!
