Neck pain - physio or other?

    My neck hurts.

It doesn't seem cycling related - I've been off the bike all week and it's killing me just sitting in front of the PC. This started a couple of weeks ago, and it's getting worse rather than better. It is surely unrelated to my TT bike purchase, since I haven't used it yet.

Should I see a physio or some other sort of prodder/stabber? Osteopath? Chirosomething?

    Suggestions please. I'm in Dublin.

    Erm, doctor?

But seriously, ruling out meningitis for the moment, have you adjusted your desk/sitting posture at work?

I had a stiff neck a few years back, went to the doc who reckoned it was postural- he advised me to stretch my neck daily and I've had no problem since.

If it ain't that and you're going to see someone, I'd be going to the physio, or possibly an osteopath. IrishFit sent me to a good osteo if you're looking for one.

I think physio, my own GP says for that sort of thing may as well go direct.

    It may need amputation.

Thats just the weight of your new moding responsibilities bearing down on you and taking effect... not to worry the next is for you to grow a chip on your shoulders, that'll soon balance it out and all will return to normal...

Try Danny Miller @ Pro health in Drogheda, he is a super physio and also a triathlete, i know its out of your way by 45mins but he is good.

A friend of mine is an excellent Pilates instructor with a history in crash trauma recovery etc. If you have questions after seeing a doctor I'll recommend you to her.

(proper Pilates not mickey mouse mat in a hall stuff).

    Hey Lumen,

I've been going to Paul Tansey since i got clipped by a car and damaged my shoulder, the trapizial(?)muscle which results in a good helping of neck pain. He's not just a Physio, he also does the bone stuff too. I'm very happy with the results and his whole approach. He's not afraid to go deep and he explains everything he does.

I'm sure you've heard of him on the forum before, but i thought I'd remind you. And he's Joe Daly's son!

    Did he change his surname?

Joe Daly's real name is not actually Joe Daly, it is Joe Tansey. As to where exactly the Daly came from I am not sure.

Aha! I thought there was a family connection, with Paul and Dave Tansey, and all working in the same building.

    Whither Mr Daly one wonders.

Maybe Joe's mam was Josephine Daly

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

I think we need a "Heal Of Dublin" event, held in the grounds of Dublin Castle, where the afflicted stand in line waiting to be poked and prodded for a few seconds by the city's top rated physical therapists in return for extortionately priced vouchers.

Joe is a Tansey but he grew up with relations as was often the way of it back in the old days. Their surname was Daly and he was known around the area as Joe Daly. When he got into the bike business it made more sense to trade under the name he was best known for.

Joe's a bit of a legend in Dublin cycle trading - http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/features/2009/0710/1224250381142.html - and the Tansey family have made a huge contribution to Irish cycle racing over the years. Paul rode for Ireland and won stages of the Tour of Ireland so knows a lot about giving and taking pain! He's well regarded having worked as a physio for world rally teams as well.
