Depends on your journey. In start/stop traffic you will get probably 30. Motorway cruising should be 40+

you can check out parkers.co.uk for manufactures figures

its hard to get 50mpg too on motorways as the speed limit is 120kph and say you average 130kph that will take a lot of juice as the the revs would be probably just above 3k.

If you are not getting about 45mpg on a long run, well I would get it checked out.

I've a 00 1.9tdi passat estate, I get a solid 51mpg in mixed driving, I'm fairly easy on the pedal though.

It all depends on the type of driving he is doing. I get 32mpg in my Passat.

Get the car onto the motorway and see what you get. Keep it at around 100. Then come back and tell us the results :)

its hard to say cause my passat doesnt have a mpg trip calculator in it for sum reason, 32mpg seems fairly heavy tho for a diesel car!

I get 51mpg on a 27mile run on the way into work. Sounds like something is causing you to burn more fuels. Common problems are ERG valve and MAF.

I get 46mpg average - all kinds of driving (accept slow). I have 92k on a 04. You should get at least 45 or you have an issue - more than likely EGR or MAF. The Mass Air Flow is about €100.
Not sure what the EGR valve would cost to fix.
