Excellent BBC4 editorial on youth use of Jamaican slang in England

    I thought this was suitable to the forum considering that in London, many white British children (from working and middle-classes) now use Hindi and Jamaican words in place of their English equivalents.

    Having listened to it, you can see how language is developing in this multicultural city and how that may impact on the language in the future.

    The presenter (poet Benjamin Zephaniah) says that when he was growing up, he used slang amongst his friends but a different 'voice' depending on his situation but says that today, kids are less willing to 'compromise' their voice for the benefit of others!

    Also, the word for North Dublin undesirables, "skanger", actually comes from the West Indian "skanker".
