Asus pretty much defined the netbook category, I would start there.

Have a look at the Toshiba NB200 I got one a few weeks ago and never looked back. Really solid build nice keyboard looks great and has a 9 hour battery life. Comes with 160gb hard drive bluetooth wireless and an SD card slot. Mine has XP but as far as I know they come with Windows 7 starter now. You would almost be better off getting a cheaper XP machine and buying Windows 7 home premium etc. as starter is very basic, can't even change the wallpapers. I have also heard good things about Acer Aspire Ones

all net books specs are pretty much the same. check for Bluetooth and wireless n draft. the main differences are in the the look, like nice spacious keyboard and bigger screens , you can go up to 11.6 hd screen, battery life can also vary. ACer generally have good option for upgraded batteries, either from acer own brand batteries or other brands than also work that are cheaper

I'm going to second the Toshiba recommendation. Got the NB200 for the wife 3-4 months ago. She loves it. Brings it to work in her handbag. Battery life is the best of the current range of netbooks and the keyboard is 97% of a fullsize laptop. The keys are spaced so it a lot easier to type than the Samsung NC10/NC120 that I had been looking to get or her. And the scrollpad is again larger than the Samsung. She does prefer to use my 15.4' screen for reading documents when at home.
The one I got didn't come with Windows 7 but am sure that the newer models will have it installed. Didn't matter to us. But the Toshiba has a lovely exterior finish if that matters to you!!

At the time I bought it, Toshiba NB200/NB205 was the best option. Samsung may have brought a newer NC... model out to compete by now.
