I remember reading that scientologists have taken an extreme stance against their "enemies" in the past. That South Park episode removed any fear people had maybe.

Can you imagine the uproar if the Catholic church or Islam was subjected to the same outright aggression? This is pure bigotry of the highest order.

I really don't understand the hatred for Scientology. Sure, it's ridiculous, but it's no more ridiculous than worshipping a 2,000 year old zombie, is it? And it's not like they're alone in extorting their followers, as the countless cathedrals, and so on will attest to.

    There's extortation and then there's extortation. ;)

    Extortion, presumably.

But let's face it, those cathedrals didn't build themselves. The Vatican didn't amass all of those lovely palaces, decorated with valuable works of art by itself. It did it by extortion. Extorting labour, valuables and money from its followers.

Going to mass nowadays is like watching teleshopping. The collection plate is wheeled around twice, there are more collectors outside the doors before and after the ceremony, and then they give you the classic sermon about the poor woman giving her last two coins to the Church - and it's presented like she's done the best thing in the history of humanity.

It's extortion of the highest order.

It really bemuses me how christians, jews or muslims can scoff at Scientology. Their own beliefs are just as deluded, and their own churches just as reprehensible.

I like the way you express your revulsion at scientology bashers and then express your revulsion at the fact that some people believe in jesus by calling him a 2000 year old zombie.

Nice. Theres a word for that isnt there.

You miss my point. I'm equally as repulsed by scientology. That's not the issue. The word you alluded to - hypocrisy - is the very issue.

I was expressing my revulsion at the hypocrisy that a largely religious society can target scientology with so much bile, condescension and ill-will, when the problems of scientology - its silly fantasy, the extortion, &c - are also present in virtually every other major world religion.

True though you could argue that we don't need another one doing the same.

Plus one could quite easily be a christian as an example without the dressing up of churches and clergy. Indeed I seem to remember the chap wasn't exactly enamoured of money changing hands in the temple and wasn't too enamoured of clergy in general. And pushed the notion of a personal relationship with the spiritual that required no one in the middle. Rome just appropriated it and added a helluva lot to that message(as did successive churches). There's quite the history in christianity of the ascetic life. You could argue similar for Islam. One could be a good muslim if you prayed at in the islamic way to your diety, followed the precepts of the faith and never stepped inside a mosque(though AFAIR you would have to pay a tax towards the poor, which seems fair enough). Ditto for a Buddhist. You could live in the middle of a forest and be a good buddhist and explore ones inner path that way. Basically I could be any one of those faiths without giving money to the mechanism of the church(and the founders of same would have agreed with me).

This scientology faith is different in that giving money to the church is one of the basic precepts of the faith. It's the way in. Like say catholicism without any of the other stuff. Thats the issue I would have with it.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Religion does that to people unfortunately. It seems that religion sparks reaction before reasoned response in most cases.
