Documentary on BBC 3 following Stuart Mangan's journey after the injuries he sustained playing rugby which left him paralysed from the neck down. Amazing, the guy has balls the size of King-Kong and his family, friends nothing short of amazing. A must see.

Are you sure the date is right Toomevara?

    The 10th is today.

    Would like to watch this.

Must tune into that. My mother had the priviledge of meeting Stuart a few months before he died and simply said he was an inspiration to us all. The rugby world really rallied around him and did wonderful fund-raising to help provide for his care. Such a loss.

Yes sorry, should have flagged it up sooner, but was unable to post. Anyone in the UK can catch it on iPlayer. I'm sure it will be shown on RTE. Let me peruse the schedules to see if there's a repeat.

It was an excellent documentary. I'd heard of Stuart's story in passing but hadn't really got the specifics of it before now.

He seemed to adapt to the situation so much better than I ever think I could.

The fact that he had such a fun loving an active life prior to the accident just made it all the more poignant.

    He really was/is an inspiration.

    RIP Stuart.

Watching this programme in its entirety (million thanks for link to i player) was an inspiration and a lesson for me especially when I complain at slightest ache/pain. This should be shown on main BBC channels (1 or 2) and on RTE.

Lifted from another board, sure they won't mind

STAR-STUDDED LINEUP FOR ENGLAND-IRELAND LEGENDS CHARITY MATCH

Some of the biggest names in rugby history will be on show for the first ever Stuart Mangan Memorial Match, between England and Ireland Legends, at the Twickenham Stoop, on Friday, the 26th of February – the night before the two countries meet in the Six Nations, at Twickenham. The match, sponsored by The Byrne Group, will be in aid of the Matt Hampson Trust and an Irish fund for paralysed players, which has the support of Keith Wood

England’s team will be led by former captain Martin Corry, and will include several members of the 2003 World Cup winning team. England’s most-capped player, Jason Leonard, will return to his former home ground, to take part. Other heroes of 2003 who’re hoping to take part are Josh Lewsey, Neil Back, Mike Catt, Paul Grayson, Mark Regan and Dorian West. They’ll be joined by other recent internationals like Richard Cockerill, Tim Stimpson, Darren Garforth, Garath Archer, Phil Greening, Will Green and Nick Greenstock, and former England Sevens players Mike Friday and Shane Roiser. Rugby player turned TV presenter Austin Healey has also said he hopes to play – all subject to availability, and barring late complications.

Ireland’s team will include Mick Galwey, Peter ‘The Claw’ Clohessy, Reggie Corrigan, Shane Byrne, Victor Costello, Anthony Foley, Richard Wallace, Paul Burke, Justin Bishop and the evergreen Rob Henderson – a 2001 Lion, who’s still appearing regularly for Esher second XV.

Matt Hampson has won the admiration of rugby fans everywhere for the courageous way in which, to use the words from his favourite film, ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, he has ‘got busy living’, after being paralysed in a training accident with the England Under-21 team, in March 2005. Despite being paralysed from the neck down, and being unable to breathe without a ventilator, he leads a full and active life and is the Ambassador for the Rugby Players’ Association Benevolent fund.

Stuart was just 26 when he passed away, on August the 7th. In April 2008, he’d suffered the worst possible spinal injury, while playing for Hammersmith and Fulham RFC, in London.

After spending seven months in hospital, he returned to his specially adapted flat in Bayswater, and resumed life. Like Matt Hampson, he never allowed his injury to affect his love for rugby and life- he was a proud son of Cork and Munster. Like Matt, he was always cheerful, positive, determined and forward-looking. When he died, suddenly and unexpectedly, he was full of plans for the future.

He and Matt had become close friends, and had often discussed doing some joint event, in aid of their respective trusts. The idea for this game was conceived, while Stuart was still alive.

Stuart’s family decided that the game should go ahead, as a tribute to him. They were also happy for all the funds to go to Matt’s Trust, but Matt wanted to ensure that a similar Irish charity will also benefit, and a fund for injured players, supported by Keith Wood, has been chosen as the other beneficiary.

The game will be refereed by Tony Spreadbury, who was overseeing the training session in which Matt suffered his injury. The aim is for this fixture to become an annual event, and plans are already under way for the return match to be played in Dublin, in 2011.

Tickets will cost £10, £5 for concessions, unreserved seating. They’ll be going on sale soon, via the Quins website.

The plan is for the game’s own website to be up and running in the next few days

Just watched it there now, really hard to believe how your life could change that much and be able to keep yourself going well after it.
He was a gent and an absolute hero.

Lads is anyone who has recorded this able to post it on Google video? Don't have Sky at the moment and BBC iPlayer is a non runner.

Was in Stuart's Law class in UCC so really want to see this.

Stuart was an absolute gentleman and continues to be an inspiration.

Who the fug, any idea when those tickets might be on sale? Just had a look at the Quins site, but couldn't figure it out (might have to do with my total technological incompetence, but...). Will be in London that weekend and wouldn't mind going to that...

    Just watched it on iPlayer.
Very moving documentary. Kind of scary in a way too. He hit a ruck, at the wrong angle and snapped his neck. Great to see he had a generally positive outlook though. Really puts your own problems in perspective.
I played in a couple of fund raising matches in London for him actually. That's one of the things I like about rugby. The fact that the whole community can rally around something like this.

Sadly not all paralysed rugby players can accept the impact as well as he did. There was this sad story last year:

Just watched this on the iplayer. Cried all the way through. I broke my neck in a tackle five years ago, the vertebrae two below the one Stuart broke. I was blessed and didn't damage my spinal cord, and have made a full recovery.

I gave up playing and got in to coaching instead. Kept going to the gym but avoided any contact.

Moved to the UK this year and have started playing again- have played six matches so far this season and am loving it, but this has really hit home.

The guy was so full of courage, and his family were unbelievable.

Like he said, he never regretted playing rugby and the memories he had from the good times on the pitch outweighed the pain and grief he had to go through after his accident.

Enjoy the game at whatever level you play at and make the most of every minute you are involved.

What a lovely guy and what a lovely family.

I watched the documentary last night and what struck me was what a gentleman he was. I know it's a cliche but he really was an inspiring person and a great example of acceptance and determination. I loved the clip with the horse nuzzling his face. And his carers were just amazing. No doubt they miss him lots too.

    Very thought provoking stuff indeed

This was shown on RTE the other night and I found it to be truly inspirational.
When faced with such adversity Stuart remained upbeat and always looked to the future. Its well worth the watch and really makes you think about life and the things you may take for granted.

    RIP Stuart
