Might be a bit of a braindead question but something I was hoping to find out.

If I travel with my laptop, which uses your standard eircom wireless router
to use the web, is it possible to get online if I travel away from home?

You hear of these Wi-fi areas, such as in the airport, and in hotels etc.

Is it possible to use the internet and connect to a broadband internet provider
    abroad at all?

Yup no problem at all. It will work the same as in Ireland.

Generally in these wifi area's in airports you just open your browser (i.ie Firefox, internet explorer etc) and all the details will be there about what to do.

Just make sure your wireless is turned out and pick one of the available networks.

In short yes. You should be able to connect to any wifi network. Provided they are free or you've paid for the privilege.

Are you talking about using the Router abroad

If you have an 02 Modem say, you would suffer roaming charges.

The laptop itself however is designed to connect to wireless local networks (WiFi hotspots) so if you find yourself in a mcdonalds or something while youre away from home, yes you can use McDonald's internet connection, etc.

Be sure that your virus scan and firewall are up to date if your going to be using unsecured networks such as those in airports

yeah but on top of that Vista and newer can recognize networks as Public and mask themselves to other PCs on the network. Is it a real danger though in a major airport? Absolutely. Prime target for crooks who would love to grab someone's bank login.
