    I'm having trouble playing a game online with a friend who isnt on campus who uses a wireless connection when using xbox live on campus. I was just wondering has anybody else had this problem and what did they do to fix it?

    My next question is about the xboxs in the students union, does anybody know if you can use your own hard drive or at least your own xbox live account and games?? How much is it and for how long?

    Lots of questions, sorry. Any help?

    I couldn't really understand your first question. Could you rephrase it to make it clearer?

    As for the Xbox 360s in the Mezz, I don't see why anyone woud have a problem with you using your own harddrive/games to save progress/stats on a certain game. Just as long as you leave everything the way you found it. I'm pretty sure the cost won't change. It's currently 1 Euro per Hour.

    As far as I know, The Mezz hasn't actually gone live yet but when they do if you have your own harddrive you can use your own account from that.

    Yeah, last i heard the infrastructure was there but the actual exerbnal connection has yet to be made, give it a bit of time, hopefully all will be up and running by next semester.

    From what i can make from your first question... you have an xbox on campus on wireless (which CSD don't allow btw) dont mention that when you call them. Anyway if its you that has this problem, call csd and tell them you want to play your xbox online from res. They will want your data port number in your room so have this ready to give them. From what i remember the xbox live ports arent opened by default.

    If all this is set up and it still doesnt work, you should either enable upnp (Universal plug and Play) on your router or open the following ports..

    * TCP 80
    * UDP 88
    * UDP 3074
    * TCP 3074
    * UDP 53
    * TCP 53

    After further reading i think i understand you, your friend is the one thats having the prob, you are on campus he is not. Is his nat settigns "Strict"? if so get him to do what i said in the last part of that post..

    Sorry for being unclear.

    I am using the ethernet cable in my room.

    I can play xbox live fine against people on the net. But when I try to play my friend who uses a wireless connection at home it wont work.

    I am unsure what the problem, it may be DCU's firewall. I have played my friend online when Im using my wireless connection off campus and its fine.

    Hope this is clearer!! Thanks for your responses.

    I didn't realise the Mezz wasn't Live yet.

    If you are able to connect to some people and not others it could be a NAT issue. If you or your friends NAT is set to strict or moderate then you will not be able to connect to each other, only to people on open nat.

    There is more information here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908880

    Your friend should be able to fix his nat to be open if his is not which should fix the problem of you not being able to connect into games with him.

    aye I went to the mezz recently to play some cod4 but unfortunately none of the xbox's there are live yet :(, had to get our money refunded (2 euro lol)

    but hopefully by next semester they'll have everything up and running and they'll have modern warfare 2 in.

    does anyone know if it's the same management as previous years?

    Actually, I think the NAT issue is on DCU's end if I remember correctly from using Xbox Live on res...

    That's what I am worried about. I imagine that it is DCU since I can connect to him when I'm using my connection at home:(. I will get him to try next time to change his NAT settings anyway when he next gets a chance. Cheers for the advice!

    It's not. When the mezz was in the canteen it was run by CSD/ISS. The university removed the funding etc. for this and closed the mezz. The contents of the mezz was given to the Students' Union so that they could set it up in The Hub

    Not Exactly,

    CSD funded the Mezz from their own budget and it was as much a suprise to them when the mezz was moved as anyone else. What actually happened is certain officials in the dcu structure required the space that the mezz was in and they closed it down giving all the equiptment to the Students Union, which they happily accepted (who wouldn't). All of this was unknown to CSD who actually paid for it, and to my knowlege they were never refunded by the university for assets that they lost. Just to clarify, to the best of my knowlege, csd, although mind that they lost the mezz and its contents dont hold the union responsible for this but the officials that were involved in repossessing the space and giving away the equiptment.

    Anyway, back on topic.. OP, it is more than likely your mates connection thats the problem, as CSD/ISS started with the game completely blocked and specifically opened the required ports for you to play. Another way of checking this is ingame it will tell you your NAT type, if its not open, talk to CSD/ISS and give them the above ports,

    Hope this helps..

    I already gave CSD the ports and the initial person I talked to was helpful but then when I went back another fella told me "there all open" more or less tellin me to leave it alone.

    I can play my friend on my own router at home so it is definitely DCU. It doesnt really matter this week, I need to concentrate on studies anyway, ha.

    Thanks for the help

    I'm going to assume that the issues are therefore related to DCU's NAT being classed as STRICT or MODERATE on Xbox Live.

    Your friend must have the same status on their xbox if you cannot play them. Your friend can get his NAT fixed so it is open (Make sure uPNP is on or put it on a DMZ if the router supports it) which should allow you to connect to him from within dcu.

    Lots of Xbox info on nat here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908880/en-IE?sd=xbox
