Is it just me or does anyone else get a little peeved when someone strolls into a lecture 30 mins late, or leaves when there is still 20-30 mins left? I know that obviously there is a good reason for this sometimes, but more often than not I think it is just being ignorant. Any thoughts??

am i one of the few people that think you should be on time and eliminate the 20-30 mins late. in the case of a double most my class wait outside till the break and then come in. If people are leaving early if there is a just reason other then your boring as f**k say it to the lecturer and sit at the outside of the row then leave with little noise and let the class continue.

If I was a lecturer I wouldn't be happy about it, but I think it's bound to happen, especially with 9 o'clock lectures, at the end of the day they are the ones losing out when they don't know what's going on.

What irritates me is when someone comes in and has to make loud apologies to the lecturer as if the world revolves around him/her.

Coming in late... meh, it happens. Personally I won't head into a lecture after 15mins late.

Meh, if they're not there they miss out.

I dont mind people being 5 or 10 mins late, but what is the point in strolling in after 30 mins and disrupting the whole class. I personally find it very distracting, especially when you are trying to pay attention and take notes on something important!
I think I was only ever late for a lecture once and that was because a lab exam ran late. if I had been more than 10 mins late I wouldnt have gone in.
    But thats just my opinion.

I have to totally agree with this even thou i won't actually be a student till Sept 2010, i was in a presentation for comp science at the open day last saturday when mid way thru some bloke just got up and left. I think its disrespectful to arrive late and the absolute height of ignorance to get up an leave during a lecture unless you have a genuine reason to arrive late or leave early and have informed the lecturer beforehand. If you were mid conversation with somebody you wouldn't just turn around and walk off out, would you?

    Phishcakes :)

So if the person has informed the lecturer before hand how are you guys supposed to know. It's not like the lecturer would explain to the class. I've left class for a doctors appointment but i bet nobody else knew i told the lecturer they probably just thought i was bored.

Honestly like though, how much of a distraction does it really make. It takes a total of about 8 seconds for someone to come into class. If anyone does it in my lectures late they try slip into the front row or go down the side passage and slip in at the back. If you're really serious about your lecture you'll just ignore them and keep focusing on the projection/board/lecturer.

well, like i said, there is obviously a good reason sometimes. As far as distractions go, you're right, it does only take a few seconds to go in or out of a lecture if whoever it is has a bit of sense and slides into the nearest available seat. That's not always the case tho. Many times I've seen ppl stroll in 20 mins late, take a seat at the back and start whispering away to a mate.

The main point I was trying to get across is that I think it's being rude to the lecturer if you leave halfway through. And we all know that not everyone has an appointment to make, especially when ppl leave in groups.

What's that got to do with being rude/late? Did you even read the thread?

Doubt he did as he has trouble spelling basic words like school.

Ehh tbh you must not be up to much yourself if you're looking around the lecturer hall. I mean there's noise for what like 5 seconds then it's back to normal again.

dont you get it?? there is no being late or leaving early - its on yourself to show up and do the work - why? because you fckun paid for it, or on the OP's case "mumsy or dadsy paid for it" ;) and thats very possibly the case for you too as you seem to find this concept so difficult to comprehend

if the money was coming directly out of your pocket you would then find this easier to understand

and CG the "skool" bit was added for extra emphasis on kids skool, now get with the thread or GTFO

There IS being late and leaving early... That's called college, you're allowed. We're not discussing the fact that people do the work or not. Frankly nobody cares whether people who disrupt the class pass or fail they just don't want to be disturbed. And the "mommy and daddy" reference... is that just to make you feel big by spouting off random condescending insults to nobody in particular?

I think i speak for the other confused people who have no idea what you're talking about when i say GTFO.

let me clear this up for you wolfric - either you are drunk or have been smokin the silly stuff again

    above opening post

thoughts: its none of your business if anyone leaves early or comes in late, they have paid for the luxury

now YDMF is that clear enough?

because of my bus I'm often late by 20 or so mins i don't wanna miss the rest the lecture, if people are late there late! mind your own business, get on with your life....

Many lecturers will enforce some sort of lateness policy if they feel the need.
For example one lecturer wouldn't allow you to enter after the class had been on for 10minutes and another lecturer wouldn't let you sign the attendance sheet after a certain amount of the class time had passed.

Then of course you get the lecturers who consistently show up about 30mins late for their own class etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 60 ✭✭Neal_B

If I was a lecturer I wouldn't let anyone sign the sign in sheet after 10 mins, unless they had a good reason. Sometimes people come in just to sign in, then leave. They're just kidding themselves at the end of the day really

If someone is late for a lecturer and comes in and sits down quietly, then fair enough, not any of my business. We've all been late at some stage or another.
If someone comes in late, and then holds up the lecture for myself and everyone else while they ask questions on what has just been covered in the time they missed, then it is my business. That's just plain ignorant tbh.

Honestly this seems like a very silly thing to be so annoyed about. Lecturers show up late, go off on tangents, run off to do photocopying etc. and that wastes time. For people who show up late and asks questions you know the answer to... well good for you, but there's probably someone in the class who didn't understand something the lecturer was saying but was too shy to say anything. And it's no harm for either of you for if it's repeated because at least you'll have it drilled into your head more and come exam time when that subject arises again you can think back and remember "that's that thing that eejit asked the lecturer a question about even though I knew it already"

When i was in Collage, i was also raising kids and held a full time job, i was always late for the first class, it could not be helped.

I'm just saying this to beer in mind that not everyone is late by choice.

This is a college in Dublin, therefore every class should start at 9:30 instead of 9:00. Then nobody will be late for class.

Colleges should start and finish a bit later, so that students and lecturers would have a chance to get to classes on time and avoid traffic jams.

You really think that's the problem?

Sure, sometimes that's the issue but move the times and you're just moving the problem. Instead of traffic jams the problem is parking spaces. If traffic is an issue just leave earlier, don't ask the college to make a huge shift, especially considering most students are on time. It's only one or two people per class.
