    One of the things that bugs me about the iphone is there's no next & back for when listening to music to skip tracks. I generally set the volume I want & leave it at that, so those volume buttons on the side are going to waste for me

    Is there an app that will change the function of them from volume to navigation buttons ?

    When you have your phone locked, press the power button to turn the screen on then double tap your home button. Works on the 3gs

    Thanks for that tip feylya, am looking for something whereby I don't have to take the phone out of my pocket though

    I don't think you'll find any App Store app that does this, it doesn't sound like something Apple's restrictive SDK would allow. There might be some solution for jailbroken phones, but I haven't heard of one.

    Next/previous track functions are implemented in the mic/remote control that is part of the headphones that ship with the phone though - and if you don't want to use them (since they are pretty crap), you can get a third party adapter to add the same remote functionality to any other set of headphones:
