Remotely wake from sleep

Ok, so I was working on a remote machine and needed to reboot. But I stupidly ran 'shutdown -s' instead of 'shutdown -r' and now I can't get the damn machine (which is 8,000km away) to wake from sleep. Any hints on how I might do that? I have the IP and MAC address.

I'm working on a mac btw, but thought this might be the best place to ask...

Does the machine have some kind of remote serial console ?

Most of our machine have RSC's, which allow me to directly connect to the console of the machine so I can send breaks etc to the OS

Unfortunately not. Some of our machines are on PDUs but not this one

if the nic supports it (nearly all modern network cards do) you can use wakeonlan to turn it back on. In Ubuntu it's just "wakeonlan <mac address>". In windows you can download a 'wol' utility. There will be a similar utility for macs - maybe ask in the Mac forum?

You have to be on the same network unless you have a WOL proxy to do it from outside.

Low tech solution - ring someone in the datacentre, and ask them to push the button?

I did find a Perl utility called wakeonlan but it didn't do the trick. Probably a networking issue.

Unfortunately everyone who works there is in bed right now. Oh well, it can wait a couple of hours.

Yup WOL works on layer two so chances are the magic packet didnt leave your network.
