The Irish team's campaign at the Track World Cup in Cali, Columbia gets underway today, Thursday.

The riders taking part in the programme of races today include:

Men
David O'Loughlin - Point Race Heats
Marcus Christie - 4 Km Pursuit Heats (Great to see a young lad getting the opportunity at this level)

Women
Scratch Race Heats - Heather Boyle and Joanne Hickey

The finals for these events will also take place later today.

You can follow their results at

http://www.tissottiming.com/sports/cycling/track/classics2009_cali/index.htm

http://www.copamundopistacali.com/

Racing starts a 12.00 local time Cali or 17.00 GMT

Best of luck to the riders.

By the way I am aware of the other thread about Cycling ireland's new website, not surprisingly there is no information on the CI website regarding the teams participation.

Marcus Christie is really a bit special, only 18 and off to the UCI academy in Aigle for the next 2 years.
Agree it's great to see him get a chance at this level

Martyn Irvine 14th in the Kilo in 1:05:723 which I'm almost sure is a new Irish record.
:D
Also AFAIK Marcus Christie just became the 3rd fastest Irish Pursuiter of al time behind DOL and Phil Collins
:D

David O'Loughlin finished 7th in the Points Race Final. The winner was from Greece on 23 points with Gen Six day legend Lijo Keisse 2nd on 19th points.

Robfowl - Dave Mc Cann did a 4.36 at the Manchester World Cup earlier this, Marcus is now the 4th fastest of all time, I imagine he could one day become the fastest :)

Newtownards rider, Martyn Irvine set a new Irish record for the Kilo when he recorded a time of 1:05.723 in Cali yesterday. He came 15th overall in the event. Cycling Ulster would like to congratulate Martyn on his achievement. At least the Cycling Ulster website is following the teams progress. As usual there is no report from Cycling Ireland either on their new website or via the media(radio etc).

Is it supposed to be a secret that we have a team competing at a world cup?

When you consider the amount of tax payers money that is spent by Irish Sports Council via CI the least you would expect is that they would keep the public updated with the progress of the Irish team.

That said even the Irish Sports Council aren't covering it on their website !!!

Sorry for the rant.

To be fair to Marian and Tommy in Cycling Ulster they are absolutely brilliant. Any dealing I have ever had with them has been a pleasure and my club love travelling up to their neck of the woods despite the huge distance involved.

Day 2

Womens 3Km Pursuit Qualifier
Sinead Jennings time was 3mins.53sec (which could be a new Irish record?), she finished 11th from 11 starters. Fastest was two time world champion Sarah Hammer from the USA she did 3mins.27secs.

Womens Points Race Heats

Heather Wilson finished 10th in her heat, she didn't score in any of the 4 sprints but her 7th place in the last sprint might allow her ride the final later today.

Heather finished 10th in the final, she was on the same lap as the winner but didn't score in any of the sprints

Irvine has got a pro contract with the Planet X Team in the UK for the new year as well, so that's good news for him on that as well.

Planet X Pro Cycling Team. The riders are getting paid therefore he is a PROFESSIONAL!

It is beginning to annoy me how alot of people on here like to diss cyclists who are obviously racing at a higher level than themselves. I ride with a group in north dublin every weekend and the topic of conversation the whole time is how crap this guy on the national team is and how crap another guy riding with that is. Some guys need to come down from whatever pedistool they are on and prove they are good enough themselves before slatting others. I doubt if we have any pros on this board!

It is beginning to annoy me how many people think there should be some correlation between how fast someone is on a bike and whether they're entitled to voice an opinion or not.

If you're offended by contrary opinions, stay off the internet.

This may also apply to weekend rides if you're particularly thin skinned.

The faster you ride the more your opinion means!

I think we need times, 53x11 and tom post your claimed times and we will organise a face-off.

Incidentally I am keen on organising a fixed-gear road TT league next year- anyone on for this?

FYP.

You can say what you like about foreign cyclists riding at a higher level than you, but wow betide you if you say anything about an Irish rider.

Seriously, why so petulant? Going around demanding respect or silence from people is so sad.

Roger Aiken
Tom Martin
Martin Smith
Sam Harrison

as for the comment about them gettin paid so they are pros.
lads i dont want to burst your bubble but out of alll the top PREMIER CALENDAR TEAMS only a handful of the riders get paid .eg russell, dean downing rob hayles, ian wilkinson , chris newton etc etc.
the planet x team will be behind the CANDI TV PINERELLO TEAM, RAPHA CONDOR AND THE NEW ENDURA TEAM(formerly halfords).

this is nothing against martin or rodger or any other irish cyclist.it just pisses me off when people come on here with false info.

I think the word pro Is mixed up with full timer too often Roche deignan and dan Martin are pros not riders who ride the poxy premier calender. Maybe with the exception of Russell downing. The Sean Kelly team is s pro team riding big races. These teams are no bigger than our cycleways, curran , EuroCycles or dan morrissey. They just have a better race program than in Ireland

I think there's a divide here between Full Time, Professional and Paid Professional. If your doing something that's become your sole income or earning and that is your job that therefore is your profession, if it comes down to a form filling in time and it asks profession, I'd bet they don't put down Unemployed, it would be Cyclist.

• Closed Accounts Posts: 25 feltAR2

Well then that answers the question. Irvine is a mechanic and Rodger a sparks therfore not pros

• Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 11,669 Mod ✭✭✭✭RobFowl

And Kelly was a bricklayer and Roche a machinist ;)

That's because prize money was better then, and there was a lot more races on, especially all the summer crits in Dublin, remember the Dublin Bus 5-day?
