A5 road scheme - Derry to Aughnacloy

    The contracts have recently been awarded for the new 86km A5 road project. It looks like it's going ahead dispite the economic downturn.

    I presume that the republic's funding offer is still on the table. I wonder will there be much unionist objection?

    Edit: I heard Conor Murphy on the radio this morning. Irish government funding is still in place.

    Jim Allister, like most politicans from east of the Bann, couldn't care less about the west. Funny that he states that the A5 is only to allow people to travel from Dublin to Donegal, ignoring the city that lies in its path.

    Weird comments on the Dungiven bypass too.
    "I am appalled by the route suggested for the Dungiven bypass. Here a wider sweep around the town than necessary has been taken, resulting in the truncating of several farms. Is this in order to avoid the more direct route which would disrupt the GAA facilities? I suspect it is and that, again, the political direction of the department is playing its part in choosing to destroy some Protestant farms in order to preserve the GAA facilities."
