Mods, hopefully this kind of thread is OK in here, if not, just delete or move whereever.

My car was written off during the recent storms, (water got into the Air intake valve and the engine is ballsed apparently) they've deemed it uneconomical to repair and I'm currently talking with the Insurance company about a settlement figure. I was hoping the peeps in here might know how much I should hold out for and maybe the salvage value.

    It's a 2002 BMW 320D with 159k miles on the clock.

They're on carzone for between 8k and 9k (10 of them) but their mileage is all around 80k - 120k what sort of reduction in value should I accept for the extra 30k miles?? [EDIT: Balls, I just saw there was a second page of cars and they go down as far as 6k :(]

Also, would anyone have any idea of the sort of salvage value it would have? apart from the engine, the rest of the body etc. is fine.

What was their first offer? If it was around the 6k mark, I think I would accept it.

Edit - didn't see your edit mentioning 6k when posting :) Did you get any offer?

Hell, in this day and age, money is money, take the first offer you get and move on, no point in prolonging the hurt of a car loss

The only salvagable parts that people might be interested in are the body panels. No one (except possibly yourself) will want it to put back on the road again after flood damage.

As for the value, those sort of cars do big mileage, the mileage itself is just a figure, its the condition of the car thats more important, and unfortunately you cant insure a car on its condition. Id be happy with 7k ish I'd say.

I haven't got an offer yet, he rang today to confirm details etc. and when I asked him for the figure they were thinking of, he just said they didn't know yet, I think they were waiting on salvage offers, he was VERY cagey, he asked me what I was hoping for. I told him 8-9k. So basically that's the starting point in the negotiations.

If they don't offer anything reasonable, get an insurance loss assessor, they charge a % of what you get, but they are good.and don't take any b*** from the insurance companies.

We had a house fire last Xmas and they were great, got us a lot more then we would have on our own.

the one we used was CRC Nationwide Loss Assessors 091-762549, www.crcnationwide.ie
