Ipod new hard drive restore

I just replaced the HDD on my ipod. it says re-connect to itunes to restore. I've installed the latest itunes software it's never had any ipod reg'd to it. itunes or windows is not picking up the ipod it's just sitting there charging (windows 7) any ideas?
