wireless (mobile) broadband affected by new extension?

Just wondered if anyone has ever experienced this . . . . we recently built a small extension onto our house, but ever since it was roofed our mobile signal and broadband signal has been affected - broadband is much much slower (can get a weak signal if we put a wireless modem on the window but its extremely slow) - and the mobile phone signal which was always good is very bad now. Someone said it could be to do with the steel used in the extension . . . is there any remedy for this?
Any advice would be gratefully accepted!!!
