Shoe fit - how much space will i really need?

just got a pair of sidi genius 5.1's off ebay... they are a size 44 and i am a size 44 bang on the nose... now, my left big-toe just barely touches the front of the shoe, i have room to move my toes when standing without cleats attached...im used to restrictive climbing shoes so in my head tighter is better, no?
My question being, do i return them now for fear that on long rides my foot will need more breathing space? as it stands they are not uncomfortable, snug yes, but is it likely i will need a smidgen bigger?

I think they should be snug but your toes should not be constricted.

Try them in the evening or after a longer ride in current shoes as your feet will swell at both these times which makes them bigger.

Your feet don't move around in cycling shoes the way they do in regular footwear so you don't need much spare room. If you're hot blooded and your feet get warm/swell up a bit you might need some extra space. If you're like me and your feet never really get warm even in mid-summer then you'll be fine ! Due to the stiffness of the sole, and the range of the closing mechanisms I think you can actually use shoes a bit bigger than normal without any problem, or loss of efficiency. It's definitely not like rock climbing - When I was climbing a good few years ago I remember stuffing my feet into rock climbing shoes about 3 full sizes smaller than my normal shoe size - painful stuff !

Have a new pair of these myself. Im a size 43 but had to return to CRC for a 44 cos the 43 were too tight. Also consider that when winter cycling you will be using thicker socks. My advice is to return them before its too late, and get a 44 instead.

i had a pair of shoes similar to that in that they were just borderline fitting me but i could have done with more space at toes. I reckon your feet will freeze in winter in them. Mine did all the time. I had gotten them in spring so they were well worn by the time the cold winter came round so couldn't return them. turfed them and got a pair with loads of room. You can always wear thicker socks. i reckon you need plenty of wiggle room to keep feet/toes warm in cycling shoes.

SIDI have a solution for that at a bargain price.

@OP- you shouldn't have a problem selling on the SIDIs if they are too small, there is a good market for them.

Yep... i think that i may have to send em back... i have feeling that i may need room for the sealskins... Thanks for the advice on "wiggle room" a fair point, as just wearing them in the gaff with thin socks they were a little constrictive...

dont suppose anyone has the need for a pair of 44 (uk 9 to 9 1/2 in reality) Sidi Genius 5.1 Black... Cost £89 will let go for €89 to save the cost of postage...

Slightly off topic, but in case anybody is thinking of upgrading shoes anytime soon, I just received my pair of the Adidas Adistar Road Pro shoes from S-Tec sports. If anyone likes the Mavic shoes then these are essentially the exact same (Adidas cycling department was taken over by Mavic or else Adidas was just originally making Mavics cycling clothing under their name, I'm not quite sure what way it is but it doesn't really matter!) except for minor colous/styling adjustments, I think they even look a bit better. The good news is that the are cheaper, a lot cheaper...in fact around half the price as the total I paid was €114.95 (€88.95 + €25 for UPS shipping - great service).

I actually fell in love with these shoes when I first saw them on someone at a race and was glad to come across the deal when I was looking at their lovely website. I contacted him to see how he found them and see if I could try his on, and he said that this was his second pair of Adidas and he loves them. Also, he paid between €180-€200 for them so he said to just get them, great value! :)

They don't make it clear but they actually do ship to Ireland, and I only found this out thanks to abcdggs here! Cheers. I was originally quoted €30 for the excellent UPS trackable service (very interesting to track it all along the way, see below, but not to mention safe secure and reassuring) but I managed to get them to do it for €25 instead. They offer Payment on Delivery but I didn't get to avail of this as they wanted me to pay in advance due to the reduced price. They only accept a bank transfer which was the only minor hindrance, but I didn't mind and could be done for free on AIB internet banking or for a fee of 75c in the bank. Takes 3 days to process and S-Tec sports sent out the shoes within a coule of hours of receiving the payment. Spot on and fair play to them.

They only have a small range of Adidas shoes but if you find one you like, try them on in a shop first. They run quite narrow, I tried them on in a shop and went for the 42 2/3 (now sold out) but usually wear a 43/44. Luckily they fit perfect (off the bike anyway, yet to see how they are on it but will put them away until Christmas!).

Mavic made all Adidas's cycling clothing. They used to be part of the same group but then they split and Mavic started selling it under their own name, reckoning it had more cachet with cyclists than Adidas did. Fit, etc. should remain identical between Adidas and Mavic. As you say the shoes are very narrow, narrower than Sidi, too narrow for me. I fit well into other Adidas stuff though which has been discounted since the brand was discontinued.
