Minister of Finance trying to stop mcross border shopping by decreasing Excise on drink in the Budget

12% off the excise on Beer and Cider

14% off the excise on Spirits

60cent off excise per bottle of WIne

How this actually works out I've no idea.

i.e. is it just 14% of the Excise in the case of spirits and if so it may only mean 5% off the total.

Really not sure how this actually works out but at least it is something.

More or less. Though the slight VAT cut will further reduce the tax take on booze, since VAT is payable on excise.

I think they were "cent" not "per cent" 12 cent per pint of beer, though I presume this will change in accordance to the % of the beer. I wasn't sure about the cider, most were only mentioning beer. A few years back cider got increased to be more than beer, so this is why you see even bigger prices between bulmers up north and here.

    EDIT.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055765469
Recent CSO data show that 44 per cent of cross border shoppers buy alcohol. To protect exchequer revenue and stem the flow of cross border shopping, I have decided to reduce excise duty on alcohol products. The reductions will be as follows:

    12 cent per pint of beer and cider;
14 cent per half glass of spirits; and
60 cent per standard bottle of wine.

All these reductions are VAT inclusive. I expect the drinks industry to play its part in making the cost of alcohol more competitive. If I find this reduction has not been passed on to the consumer I will reverse today’s reduction
The last bit was odd, what if 50% do not pass it on? seems like an empty threat. And a "half glass of spirits"?? a "glass" to me means a half pint, 16 measures in a pint, so 14cent per 4 shots?

Shouldn't a 12c reduction in excise mean 15c off the price of a pint due to VAT being charged on top? If that is so complain if you don't get it.

Yep your right ... I got that a bit wrong :o

Not sure how it will affect Beer yet but good news for Spirits.

14cent per glass would mean circa €2.75 off a bottle of spirits taking 19.7 35.5ml glasses per 700ml bottle.

Still not a bad start but not sure if it will do much for what are still much cheaper in the north.

I think a half glass is the old term for what we now call a 35.5ml measure.

Unfortunately Nope, it says inclusive of VAT

Yes, a half glass of whiskey is the standard measure (eg "I'll have a half-one"). Older optic measures still show the measure as 1/4 gill (same quantity). Confused the hell out of me when I first started work in a pub as a young lad and a customer asked for a "glass" of whiskey....

I don't know if it's anything to do with the budget, but there are massive savings on spirits to be had in Dunnes and Tesco, if not everywhere. I got a bottle of Captain Morgans and a bottle of Jagermeister for under €40 in Dunnes today. Then I went to Tesco and found out it'd have been about €3 cheaper there. Also, beer seems to be very reduced. It's nice to see.

In Tesco in Dun Laoighere today. Sign next to 15 packs of Carlsberg export (440ml) said € 13.49 reduced from €16.49. Not true as they were €15 for long enough before the budget! . So a reduction alright but not as much as they make out!!

Ive mentioned this elsewhere but Lidl are the tops at the moment. Since the budget their regular brandy is down to 11.99, cognac 15.99. They even have cans of drinkable lager 3.04 for 4. Ive no connection with them by the way, its just Ive not seen that sort of value for a long time. Not checked Aldi yet but I guess they will be pretty much the same.

Tesco are goin back on their word. they've realised now all the stock they'd bought in prior to the budget and are loosing a fortune. an example is bulmers cans went down from 2.35 to 2.12 and are back up again already. people need to be realistic and realise the thousands of euro worth of stock all off licences have in stock this time of year. the budget was what the 10th or 12th? its less than 2 weeks before x-mas. a case of spirits dropped 26 euro. how can independant off licences pass that onto the consumer straight away!!

Somebody mentioned something about sellers doing a stock take and claiming back, from the revenue, the difference in duty on their stock at the time of the budget coming into force.
Anyone know if this is possible?
Sounds unlikely since it is the wholesaler who pays the duty to revenue and they pass the charge on.

thats what tescos taught. they put in a clain for a reported six figure sum which was laughed at. of course word got out and everyone tried the same but word o the street id no one is payin out..its the opposite to last year. revenue put 50c onto a bottle of wine and demanded wholesalers refund anything they had already paid duty on but hadnt sold. i think the wholesalers laughed at them but it looks like revenue have had the last laugh

is it just me or have Dunnes not reduced prices. i was in the other day and seen paulaner at 2.49 and got suspicious when i seen the old price card behind the €2.49 one. It was for €2.50.

    what a joke.

as someone said, places stocked up before the budget, but for somewhere like dunnes not to pass on the reduction? A friends family owns a small rural bar and they got stung by buying a huge amount of booze and it'll be hard to stomach the cost, but dunnes?

If people had good relationships with their suppliers, then, surely they could return the stock and then rebuy it at the lower duty?
Although the wholesalers would be caught for the higher duty on any stock they were holding too!
