American iphone - un jail-break?

    Hi there.

My brother has a first generation iPhone.

It was brought in from USA, and jailbroken so he could use any sim card.

He now has an O2 sim card, and was thinking of "going official" so he can use the App Store.

Would anyone know, is that possible, or will the iPhone "remember" it is a USA phone if the iPhone software is installed?

    Thanks!

You do not have to have an unjailbroken Iphone to use the app store.

You can use the app store if its jailbroken. Makes no difference.

maybe it's because i'm tired but your post kind of confuses me.

are you asking can a jailbroken phone use the app store? the answer is YES.

    or

are you asking that can your brother remove the jailbreak from an american phone, slot in an o2 sim and the phone works? the answer is NO.

If the phone doesn't 'remember' that it was network locked prior to the jailbreak, why wouldn't an 02 sim work?

It does. If you restore the phone, it will be locked back to AT&T.

to add more to what aidan_walsh has said.

basically your phones IMEI is tied to a provider. if you have an american iphone it's tied to AT&T, similarly if you have a irish iphone it's tied to O2.ie. Even an english iphone is tied to O2.uk and an O2.ie sim won't work in it without jailbreaking.

Apple keep a database of which IMEI's are tied to which carriers, and only allow them to be untied if the carrier specifically requests the IMEI to be untied.

A provider will untie an i-phone if you've completed their initial contract right?

If they provide unlocking and you request it, which AT&T at this time do not.

    Apparently O2 Ireland don't either.
