It's actually been on the cards since the drop was introduced last year - it was always stated that the rate would return to 17.5% from 1 January 2010 - the only real question was whether they would take the opportunity to push it up higher (to, say, 18%)

The UK VAT rate is also liable to increase further to 20% in the second half of 2010.

Back in the real world of buying bikes and bits, the decrease to 15%amounted to **** all squared in the grand scheme of things so going back up won't matter a jot.

Definitely not going up to 20% - "no further changes currently planned" - Darling:D

Wiggle Irish prices @ 21% now though might be the same or cheaper than CRC prices @ 17.5%

There was always the possibility that they'd extend it out somewhat and keep it at the 15% to try keep exports up.

That'll not be passed on by just about everyone except online retailers who have a non-euro base currency.

No, even with the same VAT rate Wiggle is almost always more expensive. (There are exceptions, generally special offers.)

It has no impact on exports (the amount of cross-border sales by the likes of CRC at the UK rate is a drop in the ocean when compared with the total UK VAT take (which is many tens of £billions per annum)

It was stated at the outset that the rate would return to 17.5% on 1 January 2010, and there was never any realistic chance of the rate staying at 15% - the UK Budget deficit this year is £175bn or so, and they could never afford to keep the VAT rate low - in fact, the so-called stimulus it was supposed to create never really materialised)
