Am I entitled to a PRSI refund?

    Hi all.
I'm a bit confused about all this.

I have to apply for a refund of the income levy I paid at the start of the year.
I got a medical card in July 08. I didn't think to inform my employer until Jan 09 when the levy came in.
It took a few months to get it sorted hence why I've to claim back about 3 months worth of income levy payments.

Anyway, I was also wondering about the PRSI.

I have a payslip from last year and I was PRSI code AL and just checked last months and was still code AL and still paying the same amoutn fo PRSI.

From what I can see, code AL means I haven't been paying the health levy anyway, even before I got a medical card. Is this correct?
I'm also assuming that if it is correct then my PRSI contributions are correct and there are no refunds due.

    Thanks

PRSI and the Income Levy are seperate from each other- you can request your PRSI history by telephone from the social welfare office- if you have Income of below 127 euro a week you should not pay PRSI- this is non cumulative- i.e if you have income of 100 one week and 130 the next then you will pay the PRSI on the week with 130 and none on the 100- you do not add them together and say they are below the threshold in week two.

Here is the guidelines on the classes:

    http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Publications/sw14_apr09/Pages/ClassA.aspx

There is info there how to reclaim PRSI also. I have done it in the past- basically request a PRSI statement of account for the last 4 years via phone- I was told 8 weeks but got it in two. Fill out the reclaim form and it does take a few months to process after that- good luck.
