Woman tried to cut out unborn baby - World News, Breaking News - Independent.ie

    Wednesday December 09 2009
A pregnant woman who was held at an apartment in a suburb of Washington in the US for five days escaped after her captor tried to cut the unborn baby from her womb, police said.

The victim, who was homeless, was expected to recover and her daughter was delivered by emergency Caesarean section, police added.

Veronica Deramous, 40, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, false imprisonment and other related charges, said Officer Michelle Reedy, a spokeswoman for Prince George's County police.

Authorities said Deramous befriended the woman at a homeless shelter and persuaded her to come to her apartment on December 1 with a promise of baby clothes.

Officer Reedy said Deramous attacked and tied up the woman. Days later, the woman escaped after Deramous tried to cut the unborn baby from her body.

"She bound the victim's hands and proceeded to try to cut the victim's abdomen to try to get the baby out," she said.

Police said Deramous had told relatives and her boyfriend that she was pregnant even though she was not.

At some point, Deramous fell asleep and the woman managed to free herself and flee the apartment, the officer said. Police received a call on Sunday and found the woman bleeding from cuts.

Authorities received a tip that Deramous was in Virginia's Arlington County, where she was arrested. She is waiting to be transported to Maryland to face the charges.

The baby girl was named Miracle Sky.

Horrific story, just what was the captor trying to accomplish by taking a pregnant homeless woman in and cutting out her baby?

Hmmm I think my surgical procedural techniques are developing a rust, maybe I could do with kidnapping and falsely imprisoning a homeless person and performing a heart transplant from my labrador. Yes, there's something to fill up a Wednesday evening, screw the Champions' League.

Well I guess she probably has a mental health problem.

Miracle Sky is the baby's name?

Meh... Better than Rhianna I suppose.

Seems to be a surprisingly common occurence in the US - woman claims to be pregnant, goes along with it for a while, realises that when a baby doesn't appear she'll be in trouble, so she takes a heavily pregnant woman (usually a friend), murders her and tries to cut the baby out.

Attemped first degree murder on whom? The pregnant woman or the unborn baby?

Surely she was trying to cut out the baby for herself to keep. And if she did keep it, she probably would have given the yoke a nicer name.

Edit: Oh right. She tried to kill the homeless chick.

Either I misread the article and there's a male character involved that I don't know about, or there are a series of keyboards missing the letters w, o, and s.
Miracle Sky, it sounds American Indian. I am Jaguar Paw!!!

the captor was a woman not a man...so shouldn't it be the things women do for babies????

shes a bit strange alrite...god knows what the poor baby could have had considering its mother was homeless...but suppose it would have been a better life then living on the streets!!!
