RTÉ are reporting that Setanta has won the Republic of Ireland rights to Saturday 3pm Premier League games for a new three year deal begining August 2010....

    http://www.rte.ie/business/2009/1208/setanta.html

Can it keep them alive - still no confirmation from Celtic Rugby regarding next years Magners' League rights after the previous Sunday Business Post report that they had lost them...

If they have lost the rugby then they wont survive with their current pricing.

thats a pain in the ass to be honest, especially with espn also still having the rights, consumer is being demolished.

one wonders what their strategy will be? 16euro a month for just these games and no magners league surely cant get them enough subscribers?

Are these games not broadcast in the UK? So ESPN can't have these rights. ???

The 3pm package is ROI only, the FA having a strict policy against Saturday 3pm games being broadcast within England in order to protect attendances at lower league clubs.

In theory this does not prevent either Sky Sports or ESPN from bidding for these games and running them on a seperate ROI feed (for example, showing the games on Sky Sports 1 in Ireland when the UK is simulcasting Sky Sports News' Soccer Saturday). I don't think it would be worth it for ESPN and apparently Sky was previously outbid so may they just don't think it important enough.
