ok lad s , i am havin alot of trouble with my game online of late

firstly when searching for a game it does the usual , searches the game s
i used to have a search @ 100ps and get 6-8/25 good games and it would try to join, now it starts at 50ps and on finding now games and gets 0/25, works up in ten s to 100ps until it finds a game , i have found myself waitin up to 5 mins plus for a game , anyone else seeing this
as it s only started to happen in the past week or two
i am on ps3 with eircom

secondly, this could just be me , but anytime i played a FFA 8/10 time s i d be the winner , with for example 30 kill to 10-20 deaths , and again in the past week or two thats completely changed, ie play a game and i either spawn infront of someone or in a one on one even if i shoot on target first i still manage to get killed , at the moment i am lucky to come out of a game with more kills than deaths
now it s not down to lack of exp , i am lvl 15 pres 3 , 23k kills and a now quickly rising 12.5k deaths

Are you sharing your router with anybody? How many bars have you got against your name in game?

Any kind of P2P upload will kill your pings. Test it on speedtest.net. I regularly have to check my machines to ensure herself hasnt got anything stupid goin on.

if your using eircom after 6 pm there seems to be some serious contention issues which makes the lag unbearable i did a speed test last night paying for 7mb connection getting 1/2mb speeds :mad:and almost impossible to find a game i find that 9/10 lobbies im getting kicked from

I'm also having the same issue, taking a long time to connect, dumping me in a nearly-finished game, getting the 'conection' interrupted message and generally tons of lag. If I persevere, I can usually find a decent enough game and stay with that for a couple of rounds without too many issues. But matchmaking seems dire with Eircom.

All sounds like contention issues unfortunatly. Its a right pain in the hole I know. Im on NTL 10Mb, as long as my router is clear with no major traiffc i get full speeds all the time.

There a beta ping tester on speedtest now http://www.pingtest.net/. Bounce your router and ensure all p2p is off, on ALL machines connected. Other than that take it up with eircom but dont be too hopeful.

thanks for the tip, but i think by best option is to switch to NTL whenever it becomes available in my area. Eircom are a joke

I think I'll be switching my BB as part of a new bundle, unsure as to the service provider though. Forgive my ignorance but what are contention issues? I imagine it's several people using the internet in my house while I try to game? On a typical night my bro would be watching youtube vids and my mum would be checking e-mail etc while I play.

I'm on an xbox, and my online play is fine, all the time, and that's with 1mb Eircom.

But, i have noticed that most of the people with this kind of problem, are using ps3, all my friends have problems like this trying to play online, on ps3.

Same here. Thinks it either a 1 or 2MB Eircom line. Usually a laptop online at same time as Xbox, only a problem if laptop is downloading something.

Contention issues would be the amount of people on the same network spur in your area. Eircom would have advised you of this when signing the contract but like most regular Joes you (or your ma) may not have understood it. nor would they have explained it.
Its simple, if its fine during the day then gets bad after 6 then its simply cause all the local people coming home from work want to get their COD on, and who can blame them?

As for the usage in your house, it sounds fine, normal stuff, shouldn't be a problem..................however, just a theory now mind you, are you SURE thats ALL your bro is doing? Youtube wouldnt necessarily hog all the bandwidth, but other certain types of streaming might, if you catch my drift.

get them all to stop what they doing and try the pingtest, it will advise you in clear language of the situation.

FYI - NTL werent in my area, i hassled them for 6 months and they came and ran a cable down the road. During that time I was stuck with BT adsl, couldnt get above 1.5Mb, wouldn't let my dog online with that speed, my fone is faster!

I have NTL and its always been a bit flaky. Most annoying is I get drop out of 3 to 4 mins a couple of times an hour. While pings look ok I often get a lot of lag in game. So sniper rifles are useless. I notice that when its bad you get a lot of what appears to bad luck in a game. People getting you with impossible shots, lucky nades, constant bad spawns. Everyone can fire/react quicker than you. If you getting a good connection, its like you are a superhero, everything goes your way. Sniper rifles work like a dream. You notice people with good connections and fast PC's straight away, they move like lighting and have amazing accuracy. They sually have a SMG or Sniper and UAV Jammer.

You can counter a bit by playing like a noob. Smoke to counter snipers, and LMG to spray. If you know the levels well you can usually guess where people will be or guess their next move. Flashbangs slow them down so you can shoot them. UAV Jammer means you can surprise people.

Of course they hate you playing like a noob.

cheers for the heads up, im just looking for something to game with as im a massive braodband user with online gaming pc and xbox so eircom are pissing me off paying for 7mb and people with 1mb getting better service.

Close but no cigar. Intead of your house, think of your area. So basically eircom/ntl etc sell chunks of bandwitdh at say 5mb to customers, with a contention ration of 24:1 for example. Eircom basically use that one chunk of bandwidth to provide internet connectivity to multiple sites. What this contention ratio effectively means is that they are saying the highest number of separate connections on that 5mb is 24 at any one time. So you could have 23 other houses nearby also using it, so your percentage of the pipe gets squeezed.

Hence times like 6-8pm are the worst cause you are most likely to have lots of people arriving home and going online. So you get closer to the 24:1 limit. When you are online at 3am, you can end up getting the whole 5mb pipe because no one else in the area are online and using it.
