My second garmin has just died within 18 months which i am not very happy about. I am thinking of getting a TomTom but i have alot of favorites on my Garmin that i want to transfer over. Is it possible to transfer them to a Tom Tom and if so how do you do it?

All favourites (plus all stored routes and tracks) on the Garmin are stored in a single file called \Garmin\GPX\Current.gpx.. It's a GPX file, which is pretty much the standard format for the interchange of GPS waypoints, tracks and routes, so it's almost certain that somehow you'll be able to import these into the TomTom somehow. Just copy that file somewhere safe, assuming your Garmin isn't so dead that you can't even connect it to the PC, that is!

spoke to someone in tomtom and they said that it can not be done by copying and pasting the gpx file. I was wondering is there a programe that i can convert the format of the file and view my garmin favorites on a tomtom.

GPSBabel would do that for you ...

that will transfer them into POI. If i save new favorites then ill have to look into 2 folders for my contacts (favorites and POI) which would be a pain. what file format are the tom tom favorites?

That tool will convert the waypoints in a GPX file into a few TomTom formats, not just POI's by the look at it, including a 'places file'. No idea if that's the TomTom equivalent of favourites or not.

Here's a list of all the formats it'll convert to.

Anyway, if this can't do it, I'm sure an extensive Google of 'import GPX to TomTom' will throw up a few other alternatives.
