    Hi,

I'm coming on study abroad to UCC from January onwards and thought it would be great to vaguely know a few people there before I come over! I'm doing modules in applied maths and statistics and am in my 2nd year.. Also, I'll be living in North Quay Place apartments. I have a million questions so if anyone would like to help me out, drop me a post or a PM :)

    Thanks!

    Pippa

    Great- thanks everyone!

I mostly wondered about the general way everything works at UCC compared to what I'm used to here. Where do most students live? In campus accomodation or private housing? And does everyone go out in Cork city most of the time? Any recommendations?? Also, I wanted to try and mix with more Irish students instead of just international students.. what do you think the best way to meet people is? are there plenty of clubs/societies to join?

If there are any maths/applied maths/stats students around here, I wonder if you can tell me about the workload? I have no idea even how you're taught at UCC- lectures and workshops or just lectures...?

On the more technical side of things, once you register online do you get a UCC account and password? I don't know where I would find my timetable or any course resources!

No, i'm actually doing second year applied maths modules but only a first year stats one (st1051) i think. I guess you maybe did that last year?

Apologies for all these questions!! Thanks for the help :)

Quite a broad variety of living arrangements, personally I used to live in an apartment complex, but in privately rented houses the past two years. I know a lot of people living in campus accommodation and a few living with their parents. Most people would go out in the city centre, there's also the college bars which are good fun! What type of music/scene do you like, maybe we could give you reccommendations based on that? There's loads of clubs and societies but I'm not involved with any of them myself so I'll let other people fill you in :pac:

here's a start http://timetable.ucc.ie/, not sure if you know what department you're in though, but I think you can search by module code as well!

Just to throw in my two cents.
Most people i would say are living between the various campus accomodation complexes and private houses around the place. Even some of my friends who's family home is within 20 mins of UCC have moved out for the college year.

There are the college bars on campus where drink is quite cheap. Depending on whether you are a pub/club person and what music you like there is numerous plaes you can go out to in town.

My friend is doing maths science 2nd yr and basicaly you have your normal lectures...then you will have tutorials.workshops where you will more than likely have a postgrad going through q's and helping with problems and then u will have labs where they work with the computer based programs etc.

You wont get your UCC account and password till you arrive on campus. You will need to go to the students resource building where you will be issued with a student number, pin code, temporary password for the computers and your student card. According to the international students section yer orientation day hasnt been organised yet?

Your timetable for Am modules should be in here somewhere
    http://timetable.ucc.ie:8009/reporting/individual?objectclass=department&idtype=id&identifier=507%0D%0A&t=department+individual&days=1-7&weeks=20-31&periods=1-20&template=department+individual

    And your st modules
    http://timetable.ucc.ie:8009/reporting/individual?objectclass=department&idtype=id&identifier=508%0D%0A&t=department+individual&days=1-7&weeks=20-31&periods=1-20&template=department+individual

And nah we just had to take on statistics this year for biochem.

Hi Pippa, i think Papa has answered most questions for you, but if you need help getting accommodation don't hesitate to send us a private message. Private accom is really cheap now compared to last year so i would recommend that over staying on campus which tends to be a bit on the dear side.

It's hard to get a direct number on it but there's many different opinions about it. I personally have been living in a private house (i.e not 'on-campus') for the past 2 and a half years, great choice for me. There's plenty of arguments of the good/bad points of living on campus or not. There were a number of good threads about UCC's accomodation on this board but the number of pages of threads only goes back so far.
And does everyone go out in Cork city most of the time? Any recommendations??

Cork City yes. There's a huge load of places around and the college bar(s) seem like good fun even though I've only been there a few times. Most places will be cheap-ish depending on your choice of beer. Again there was a good thread discussing this but I can't find it.
Also, I wanted to try and mix with more Irish students instead of just international students.. what do you think the best way to meet people is? are there plenty of clubs/societies to join?

Plenty of choices. What're your interests? Here's a link, there's quite a good choice here:

Not sure of maths and the like but majority are lectures and tutorials with labs in some degrees.
Apologies for all these questions!! Thanks for the help :)

    Don't worry, keep asking.
