Is there a conflict on interest?

I know the vast majority of people of all creeds around the world will be horrified by the findings in the Murphy Report. But, todays meeting between the Papal Nuncio to Ireland Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza and Minister Martin got me thinking.......

The fact that nearly all of our government ministers, Gardai and Judiciary in this country are Roman Catholic. Does this mean that there is a possible conflict on interest when persuing justice for those aboused? Will there be an absolute desire to bring all accoused to task? Do these people want to risk completly distroying their church?

I would say there is undoubtedly a conflict of interest. The Dail deputies pray together at the start of the day's business, think about that. Of the two leading figures in goverment, Cowen is a practising catholic, Coughlan is a devout catholic who strongly opposes abortion on religious grounds. There couldn't but be a conflict of interest. These politicians have no real desire to rock the boat, there is still collusion between church and state just like there always has been in this country.

That is partly down to the religious persuasion of our politicians. But it's as much to do with a desire not to offend their voters, who in this country are predominantly catholic. Politicians will do and say whatever it takes to keep their seat and hold onto power if they have it, because ultimately that's all most of them are really worried about. So if that means pandering to the catholic majority that's what they'll do, even the ones who aren't particularly religious themselves.

I call Minister for Cruel and Unusual Punishment.

Yep definitely a conflict of interest there but at the same time I think noone wants a church that can harm their children and they will have no sympathy for those involved. I don't think there's any fear of it destroying the church, in fact if there isn't reform that's what would destroy it.
