Is something serious wrong with my car?

I have a 2003 peugeot 307. Never had any trouble with it. Regularly serviced and passed NCT twice without any problems.

Today when driving into a parking space I turned the wheel clockwise to turn sharp right and there was a god awful noise.. like metal scraping slowly against metal.

Now when I drive it away from lights or at any kind of slow speed I can hear this awful noise coming from the front wheels. It's not the engine that I am sure.

I'm wondering would this be the sound of a shock absorber or suspension failure? Is there any quick and dirty way to find out what might be wrong?

Im no mechanic but could a spring have gone.. could it be the wishbone, maybe your shocks and a spring have gone, suppose the only way to find out is if it is brought to a mechanic... good luck with it, I know what its like to get noises from the car and panic but if the engine sounds ok and its still running I would think its nothing too serious x

my guess would be a knackered CV joint and there will probably be another 100 guesses coming.

General rule with "godawful noises" ...stop driving ...get it checked asap, it might be safety relevant.

God invented awful noises for a reason :D

Have someone who knows what they're at take a look at it.

It could be as simple as a bit of gravel stuck in a brake calliper, but it could also be something potentially dangerous.

It's hard to diagnose noises on t'internet :D

did you check all your wheel nuts?

    Like mentioned above..
It could be...Brake pads worn down to metal which maybe causing the slow scrapping noise...either way you need to get this checked out asap..

Jack it up the front of the car turn (spin) the front wheels on full lock both ways and see can you replicate the noise.
    Best of luck...:)

I second the gravel in the caliper.

If you can get a mate to listen to the car and pinpoint which wheel the noise is coming from.

    Then pop that wheel off.

    +1 on the CV joint.
A loose wheel usually results in a progressively worsening knocking sound followed by a hub scraping tarmac sound ;). I know this from expeience.
Suspension problem would/should be noticeable in handling.
Generally noise at full lock = CV joint but definitely get it checked by a professional. It usually doesn't cost anything to get a diagnosis. Drop into an Advance Pitstop or similar and ask them to have a look.

For the love of god don't go near advance pit stop. If you do you'll end up with a new set of tyres too :p. I had a similar fault on mine a while ago. There was metal filings from the old brake pads where they had worn right down lodged around the brake caliper / hub area.

could be the power steering ... switch could be gone in it

    cheers all.

So many things could be wrong by the sound of it.

So the brakes were replaced (disks and pads) only about 8 or 9 weeks ago so I reckon that rules out brake problems.

The noise is very metallic so I'm not convinced that it's gravel in the brake callipers but I could well be very wrong.

I took the car down to the place I usually get it serviced but they could find nothing wrong. Not very encouraging at all.

I'm gonna try calling a local mechanic that the family has used for years. He'll get to the bottom of it.

The noise comes and goes so for now it seems safe enough to drive at a moderate speed.

Op does this noise only happen when the car is in motion or can you hear it while stationary with the engine running???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56 ✭✭Justin_k

the noise only happens when the car is moving, and is at its worst when I turn hard left .. such as when pulling in to a parking space.

It appears to be coming from only the front left wheel area.

once the car straightens up and moves off gradually the noise disappears again for the most part, only hearing the odd clanging noise when slowing down for speed bumps and such like.

I'd put money on a CV joint / drive shaft issue

Given the extra information from the OP, I'd be inclined to agree.
