How does the installer determine the length of the ground loop?

Bearing in mind the various soil types - how is the length of the loop calculated?

In my case, the installer has already put in 400M or undergorund piping.

After running the system for a year, i am of the opinion that the loop is not long enough. The soil is of a dry type.
I have seen few articles on the web that states that the drier the soil, the longer the loop should be.

    Whats peoples opinions/experiences in this?

Can you provide figures for total heat pump output (in kW) and COP? (or the make & model of the pump?)

What lead you to believe the collector was undersized?
