A bit of advice needed... Energy Eng?

    Hi All,

    I'm a Mechanical Engineer with over 14yrs postgraduate experience in various engineering areas - Design, Proj Man, Process, Software Applications... this and that! I've also been involved in 2 business start-ups - neither of which worked out but sure thems the breaks, eh? At the moment I'm in my final year of a Masters in Energy Management.

    So, here's the story at the moment: I got laid off 6 months ago and am really struggling to find something. I suppose I'm like a lot of people out there - trying to keep me chin up and hoping for the best.

    I'm really interested in Energy Management/Systems (hence the postgrad) and have been putting myself forward for jobs - The problem is that I'm getting knocked back for lack of industry experience. At this stage i'm getting a bit demoralised - it's like when I graduated in the 90s and had to leave the country to get some experience! The old catch22 - no job without experience and no experience without job. :rolleyes:

    What really gets to me is that most of these jobs are specifying min 4yrs experience - that's fair enough but to my memory there wasn't many jobs for Energy people in Ireland 4yrs ago... Where the feck are all these experienced candidates coming from? :confused:

    Anyway, what I really need is some advice on how to get some experience in the field. I'm newly married and I don't think my wife would appreciate me heading off on a longterm contract abroad but I am considering it.

    Another potential is to try to set-up another business - some kind of consultancy maybe...

    I'm also thinking of offering my services FOC but I don't really know how this would be received by a potential employer. Is it likely that I get good experience or will I end up skivying? I'm sure there's no guarantees but I'm very interested in peoples experiences with this kind of thing.

    So that's a lot of stuff in my head unloaded onto the page. I really appreciate any advice that you guys/gals have.
