Lone parent payments and employment.

I just have a few questions regarding starting work when receiving this payment.

I just started work recently as temp xmas staff in a shop, so my contract ends 31december. I was told before i started working that after every 146euro i earn i'll be deducted 50 cent from my OPFP for every euro i earn. But generally I'm only working a few hours a week so wont earn this much unless i get extra hours, which i have done a few here and there.

So I rang up the welfare office today to notify them and ask about the reduction in my OPF payment. she told me to bring in my first payslip (I wont get it for another week or so) and they'll let me know. when i told her it was done on an extra hours basis and not a flat rate each month she told me to bring in the two payslips and she'll average it out.

so what i think my question is (!) is how are they gonna average it out and when will they deduct it? like will they take it away fromone weeks payment next month after ive been paid from work? cause if they do i'll basically be left with nothing if that makes sense, cause ive been paid weeks ago?

To be honest that doesn't sound right. Basically there is a €146.50 disregard on your earnings, so basically you can earn up to that amount before any means are assessed.
Once the 146.50 is deducted from any earnings the resulting total is then halved, and there is a means band table about €5 less than that amount which is your equivalent means if that makes any sense?
What she means probably is she will take the average total earnings over the 2 payslips, and this will be your average earnings. It will take affect from the week they receive the payslips. You could get a letter from your employer stating your hourly rate of pay and the average hours you work to submit that before you get your payslip.

so i can earn up to 146.50 and then after that, my earnings are assessed and my payment will be reduced?

After you earn over 145.50 your claim is reduced by 50 % they don't deduct

Calculation of income from employment for One-Parent Family Payment
The amount of payment you get depends on your weekly means. Income from employment is calculated as follows:

The first €146.50 of your weekly earnings is not taken into account. This means that you can earn up to €146.50 per week and qualify for the full One-Parent Family Payment. (Social insurance contributions, health contributions, superannuation contributions and trade union subscriptions will not be taken into account in the assessment of earnings).

Half the remainder of your earnings up to €425 per week is assessed as means. If you earn between €146.50 and €425 per week you may qualify for a reduced payment.

ok but im only working for a month and im already claiming the payment (ie. they arent assessing my means and eligibility) so it wont be reduced it'll be deducted for the month im working and then back to normal when i stop working.

What they are doing is reassessing your means while you are working.
So they need to see what your means will be while you are working.

For example just say you earn €200 a week.
    So they take €146.50 from the €200 = €53.50
They then half this = €26.75
Your means from this would then be approx €20/€22.50.

This would then be reduced from your weekly payment. Then when you stop working, they will reassess your means again without your earnings.
Does that make it clearer for you?

Get a letter from your employer in if its going to be faster than waiting on your payslip and they can adjust your weekly payment quicker.
