    Hey lads,

Just wondering if anyone knows of any places I can buy a new charger in Dublin City Centre? Also what cost? My laptop is a HP 550.

Usually they have universal chargers in Maplin (think its on Jervis Street) or PC World (in the Jervis Centre if I'm correct), or any of the electrical stores like Curry's or Harvey Norman. I had to get one earlier in the year and prices can vary considerably so shop around, might even be handier to call a few first or try the websites for different prices.

Right lads I got the Hahnel Universal Adaptor but the thing is freaking me out. Every time I put it in to charge sparks come out. I can see burn marks on the part which goes into the Laptop and I'm furious as this thing cost €100. The guy in Peats said that the voltage was fine and there was no need to mess with it. He's obviously wrong. The instructions aren't helpful in regards to lowering the voltage, how do I do it?

Not good, hopefully the voltage wasn't set to high. Ya could seriously damage your laptop.

Is the correct pin attached to the adapter. maybe that is causing the arching and sparks.

Edit: Bring it back and ask for a refund and order a genuine charger.

Yes, it's definitely the right pin/plug, I brought my Laptop in with me when I bought the charger, the guy set it up.

Will they give me a refund since there are burn marks on the pin?

So there's no way I can lower the voltage myself? It's at 19.5.

EDIT Well I've sent an angry e-mail to Peat's, see where that gets me. :pac:

Universal chargers suck. Get a refund and order a genuine replacement online.

19.5 is the correct voltage for my HP.

What's all this genuine talk? :pac: I would have got another HP Charger, however two have already crapped out on me, their quality is questionable. ;)

Do you want me to look into things for you? Do you want to give me the details on what you asked for/was sold to you?

Are ya a Peats employee or something? :pac: It would be cool if you could, that would be great.

I had my Laptop with me so I just said that my old charger was wrecked and that I needed a replacement. He looks at his shelf, picks the Hahnel 2 in 1 Power Adapter out and sets it up. He inserts the adapter into the Laptop and we get the charging light flash up so seemingly everything is all good. It was only yesterday that I realised sparks were flying, and just there I could actually SMELL something burning.

I'm pretty sure I'm going in tomorrow looking for a refund but as I said, there are burn marks on the pin, so in all likelyness they are not going to give me one. If I could get the blooming thing to stop sparking I would be a happy man.

If you send me a PM with the name of the salesman, it'll be on your receipt and the part number of the charger you bought.
Also what is the output voltage and amp rating of your old power supply. If you don't have this anymore the information should be on the bottom of your laptop.

2 genuine chargers and a universal all not working, Sounds like a problem with the laptop and not the chargers.

It's sorted now, thanks to Kintaro. :)
