Up there with the best ever. Won't ever forget seeing him come on again in an All-Ireland Final and winning them the match.

Goal against Kerry was great too

I'd put maurice fitz ahead of him. The man was a genius.

He was sheer class. It was not just form, he done the simple things really well and done them all the time. His all round ability was amazing.

My favourite forwards were Pat Spillane, Mickey Sheedy and Colm O'Rourke. A fit O'Rourke was some player not quite the finess of the others. Would love to see Sheedy and Spillane playing today. Sheedy especially had a real touch of class.

To answer your question was he the best? I would pick Sheedy ahead of him and possably O'Rourke.

Something about him - when Tyrone hadn't such a good team for much of the 90's he got most of their scores and was their best player. Then when Tyrone came good in the 00's he was still the best player on an outstanding team. Also, the longevity of his career playing at a high level was something else only matched by few in recent times(like Darragh Ó Sé).

Just a point there, ya can't compare canavans career longevity to Darraghs, fair enough twas long, but comparing a forward to a midfielders wrong, work done in the midfield far outstrips the forwards

He was a great player on a poor team for a long time.

However Sheehy and Pat Spillane were great players on great teams.

Maurice fitz kicked an all ireland on his own with a poor team in 97. Canavan never managed to do that.

It's hard to know. He defo was a big game player though.

I think Gooch is actually on his way to becoming the best player ever. 4 All Irelands and the dude is only 26 still.

Was he the best forward the game of football has seen?

Hard to say if he was the best. Too many to choose from. It's like trying to pick your favourite song, different ones have different qualities and for different reasons. But he was certainly among the best that I've seen.

I taught for a long time that he would be one of the best footballers not to win a celtic cross. Great to see him winning them and having such a key role in them aswell.

ya ill also never forget him pulling Gooch to the ground at the end of All Ireland '05....not a nice way to finish a career but still an excellent player....Mickey Harte probably told him to pull him down:D

Pure class, for a small man to have such a huge impact on the game is unbelievable!!

Definitely one of the modern greats. Very accurate, and a man for the pressure situation.

The pulling etc in the final with Kerry, a minus in my book. Some thing i didnt like. Fitzy had that bit more class, and wouldnt be up to that crack.

Still Canavan was a great player.
