    Would the department ever get around to making a better course for us in 1st year BA!?

    Secondly...

    I did an assignment on 1st and 2nd inversions, I fluked it, but can someone tell me a step by step kinda set way to identify whether something is in 1st 2nd or 3rd inversion?

    Example

    Key: Bflat Maj.

    Treble:F
    D
    Bass: B
    F

    I would say, thats the chord of Ia, but I know i'm wrong.

    Any help?

    Kev

    Well it is I, 'cause it's Bb-D-F, but since F (the fifth) is the in the bass, it's second inversion, so it's Ic.

    a = root in bass
    b = third in bass
    c = fifth in bass
    d = dominant seventh in bass

    Hope that helps some :)

    Root inversion = when the root of the chord is in the bass.
    1st inversion = 3rd of chord in bass
    2nd inversion = 5th of chord in bass.

    *A 2nd inversion will usually only appear in the last or 2nd last bar.

    To identify it, look at all the notes playing on that beat. Arrange them so it's note+3rd+3rd (I.E Bb + up a 3rd = D; + up a 3rd from D = F) and you've got your chord.

    Then see which of the notes is in the bass. Bb means root position, D means 1st inversion, and F means 2nd inversion.

    Is that clear enough? If not say so and I'll find another way of explaining it! there's no shortcuts though, just practise.

    So how hard is a 1st year Music History listening exam? I'm not very familiar with a lot of the examinable works yet, the exam is on Monday...

    Not that hard :) Just learn to recognise each piece, the name, period and feature about it. Eg Mozart, piano concerto, 18thC, use of *******.
