    Well lads,

Santy's bringing me a new scope for my .243, but due to recessionary times he's a wee bit tight!

What would you recommend for around €600? Gonna be used for stalking and a bit of foxing so variable would be prefered.

    Would consider second hand aswell.

    Ta. :)

for me new scope has to be 6x42 schmidt & Bender ( great all rounder )
or go 2nd hand and get something variable !!

stick to S&B, Zeiss, Leica if you can get it within your budget

If you were willing to stick to a fixed power you could get a good schmidt and bender from their hungarian klassic range. Couldn't praise a scope higher. I have an 8x56 on my 223 for foxing and it works brilliant.
Try optics warehouse too, they sometimes they have great scopes at reduced prices in their clearance section.

Buy outside Ireland anyway for a start, you'll avoid being ripped off that way.

You can get 3-12 x 56 Docter Clasic scopes In Ireland for under 700 euro and some people say they are well up there with S&B

Where can you get them fodda?

I suppose a few places here sell them but if you google Docter scopes on an Irish search you will find irish websites selling them.

You could try http://www.opticsplanet.net/ , it is a U.S. site , so you would have to be aware of possible customs charges. Even at that they would have to be cheaper.

I got a few scopes from midsouthshooters.com they are great value, but US companies nolonger ship scopes and other gun stuff since the twin towers, some will if you send money in advance, no paper trail. Simmons are great value and very good glass, so are Bushnell.

Whatever you do stay away from second hand varibles as no one ever sells a good scope, only clunkers, you can check all optical glass by looking through it backwards, this will show up any blemisses or scratches in the soft optical glass.

I've seen and owned a few 6.5-20x 44mm Simmons scopes and they dont lose zero and are very bright, the inside design is Leupold design under license I've heard, your looking at about $200 bucks worth double that here, the 20x power comes in handy for foxes past 200 yards.

The Sportsman gun center, it's in that Gunmart magazine anyway, UK is great for scopes and no problem sending, plus £sterling is low in value.

    Best of luck

    HJ:)

Mind, customs might nab you and send you beyond €600, but they've great value on Zeiss conquests.

    Recommend http://www.survivalsuppliesireland.com/

Really good to deal with, fast tracked, traceable deliveries, reasonable prices too and they're Irish (Mayo).
