Mac OS X (NO symbol/'broken folder') Issue

Ok, let me first say that I have little to no experience with Mac's.
So a friend of mines MacBook (could be a Macbook Pro... Not sure what type but it's a Macbook) has the following Error: http://support.apple.com
    /kb/TS1892

Now I know it has the solution on that site but that's not the problem. The problem is that in the givien solution it talks about Archive and Install. Now first it tells you to Reset the PRAM and NVRAM and see if that works. So I did. And it didn't work. So the next step is to Archive and Install.

Now I want to try and save all the stuff on the Macbook while also reinstalling the OS X (Leopard).

    So what I'm wondering is;

    1. What exactly is Archive and Install and what does and doesn't it save when done (I dont understand Apples explaination).

    2. How do I back up everything on the HDD and reinstall the OS. (Main problem)

    3. Should I just put the OS CD in and reinstall it normally or should I still Archive and Install? (I have a feeling the first way will just reinstall the OS 'ontop' of the other one and waste space and If possible I don't want to do that.)

    4. My Friend also wants to upgrade to Snow Leopard but do you have to reinstall Leopard first before you can upgrade? Or can you install SL in it's current state?

Any help on this is most appreciated. :D

Archive and Install creates a folder in the HDD called Previous System, and moves the current OS X installation into that. Then it installs OS X again.

If you select the option to Preserve Users and Network Settings, once the reinstall is complete those files are moved to the newly installed system, so it should startup with the same users and files in place.

No option installs one on top of the other. Archive and Install will move everything to a Previous System folder, the Erase and Install with format the HDD first destroying all data.

So it's like a Zip file, right ok. Thanks that makes everything so much clearer to me. :)

So should I just follow the the instuctions on the site about archive and installing and also concerning the Leopard and Snow Leopard query, should I just reinstall with Leopard then my friend can upgrade when she pleases?

Not really like a zip file, its just a folder on the system that everything gets moved into before the new install starts.

Regarding Snow Leopard, personally I would sort out the Leopard issue first and upgrade then. Others may suggest otherwise.

Perhaps if you tell us the issues you're having we can help resolve those before you resort to such drastic measures ?

Click the Link above in my first post.... that leads you to the Apple support section of the website and its on the exact problem my friend is having... I know I didnt actually explain the problem but the problem is exactly the one shown on that link so I didn't want to waste time typing it out again, also the question were more based on the solutions the site gives so I thought it was appropriate to link.

Either way Aiden Walsh has already given me the help I need but If you have anything else you would like to add then feel free

    Rob.
