I saw an all surface rugby pitch beside Clontarf Dart station this morning. Great to see.

Can someone tell us what's going on?

    Thanks.

AFAIK it has nothing to do with Clontarf Rugby club.
Not sure what the craic will be with it when it is finished.
The Parks & Landscape Services Division is currently carrying out development works at the public open space including the area of the former traffic school, consisting of a floodlit synthetic surface playing pitch facility, with full sized GAA pitch, full sized soccer pitch (which can also be used for rugby) and a 7 a-side soccer playing pitch. The area will provide training facilities when complete for these sports and may possibly be used for fixtures. The facility includes suitable fencing and a hurling wall.

The cost of the project is €3 million, and is being funded by Dublin City Council, GAA and Dept of Tourism, Sport and Recreation. The works are being carried out by Contractor, G Thornton Ltd, specialists in the area of synthetic sports surfaces, to the highest specification of the requirements of GAA, FAI, and IRFU and these works are being supervised and tested by SportsLabs Ltd for Dublin City Council.

It is scheduled that the development phase of the project would be completed by the end of October 2009. However, due to variable weather conditions the target completion date currently is mid-November 2009. A specific use management system will be developed together with Sports Section of Culture Recreation and Amenity Department, based on available resources. The ongoing maintenance of the facility will be carried out by the Parks & Landscape Services Division. Clubs can contact Sports Section of Culture Recreation and Amenity Department to register their interest in the possible use of the facility when completed. It is anticipated that any charges for the use of the facility will be in line with charges for other training facilities provided by Dublin City Council. 19/10/09.

Playing Rugby on an astro turf / all weather - how does that work out?

Its not that bad if its anything like the all weather pitch in UCD. You might get the odd burn from the plastic grass but its actually quite nice to play on. You can wear normal boots on it as well.

It's great to see a county council put some money into Rugby facilities. I hope it's used.

Well the pitches in Clontarf Rugby club are notorious for over use. Pretty much only one pitch used for every senior side in the club (the first team use the main pitch for run outs but thats it). Would be great to have another area to train, it's no fun playing tip rugby in the dead ball area.

Clontarf should try to get a regular time with the pitch before it's booked out for 5 aside soccer.

Painfully if UCD is anything to go by lol, although in fairness it's only a knees and elbows thing, hitting the deck isn't that bad!
