A problem with GPS and SD card

    Hi,

I own a Garmin Nuvi 360. I recently downloaded the Garmin european update 2010.20. However I was told I havent got enough space on the GPS for the whole map and that I should buy a sd card.

Next day, I picked up a 4gb SDHC card. Got home and inserted the card into gps and connected it up to computer. This is where the problem starts...

For some reason I cannot get the device to read the SD card. When connected to my PC with a USB cable the Nuvi shows up as drive D and the SD card -- inserted into the Nuvi -- shows up as "Removable Disk F." However, the User's Manual says the SD card when inserted into the Nuvi should show up as "nuvi sd." I must be doing something wrong but I don't know what.

    I'd really appreciate some help!

The 360 used to have a 2gb card limit, but this was changed a few years ago by a software update. Have you updated the unit to the latest firmware/software using WebUpdater?

My 600 shows the SD card as a "Removable Disk" - so I don't think that's a problem.

What is it that you are trying to read on the card? Maps, POIs, MP3s?
Perhaps the file structure on the card is not correct?

Create folders on the SD card, exactly the same as on the 360, so you'll have a Garmin folder, which will contain your maps. In the Garmin folder you'll also have the POI folder (note capitals).

If you want to add photos or music, then create the JPEG & MP3 folders, exactly the same file structure as on the 360, and store your content there.

Let us know how you get on.

    :)

    Thanks for your reply mrmac.

After doing what you told me, I managed to get the Garmin maps on to my sd today. :D

However unfortunately I have another problem:mad:. After dowloading the maps, I turned on my GPS with the sd card in it, a loading screen appears informing me that it is updating my maps, then the screen suddenly goes blank and the GPS turns off.

    Any idea whats going on?
    Thanks

Did you download the map update using myGarmin\myMaps?
Did you use the Garmin installer?
Did you download the file to your PC first?
Is the unit fully charged, it can take a while for the transfer?
Does it do the same thing every time you try to start it?
Have you tried starting the unit without the SD card?
You shouldn't update the maps on the unit itself, remember you don't have enough memory, the map should stay on the SD card, and your unit will use it from there.

    Hi mrmac

I used Garmin's "map install" programme on my computer to put the map on the sd.

The unit is fully charged. It does the very same thing every time it is turned on.

Without the SD card the gps works fine.

As far as I know I updated the maps on to the sd card, as the file is located in the "garmin" folder on the card.

Should I delete the western europe maps that are on my gps unit already, will this make any difference? I suggest this as I am thinking the unit may befinding it hard to process the two maps; w. europe on the unit and all of europe on sd

    Thanks for your time

Can you PM me with the entire file structure of your SD card?
If you could take a screen shot, of how it looks in explorer, that's be great.

It does sound like some issue with the new map. I wouldn't delete the original maps off the sat nav, as you should easily be able to use the map from the SD card.

It's gonna be something fairly simple, so don't panic .......... yet! :D

    Got the screenshot.
First thing is to delete/move all the other folders off the SD Card, apart from the Garmin one. You can save these to your PC if you wish, but as it's a new card, I suspect that all the other folders are empty?

How did you get the new maps? Was it as part of the Lifetime Map Update deal, or did you buy it seperately?

EDIT: I meant to ask if you've checked that the 360 is using the latest software? Remove the card, and start up WebUpdater, download/install any updates that it finds.

Just deleted all other folders off the sd card, no change.
Yes I downloaded the Lifetime Map Update deal.
    Yes I am fully up-to-date.

    :confused::confused:

I'm a bit confused by what you mean by, Western Europe maps?
That's a TomTom term, as I think Garmin only did/do Europe and Regional, and as far as I recall, the 360 came with the full Europe map?

Anyway, it appears from posts by other members, that the best way to install the maps, is through myGarmin. If you've activated the Lifetime Update "gift", then you should have a link for the update in myMaps. I'd copy & remove the current map file from your SD card, and start the update again, downloading to the SD card.

One thing you could try before that, is to see if you can view the map using Mapsource?

You can download Mapsource directly from Garmin, they don't include it anymore on disk

Unfortunitely, Mapsouce won't install unless you have a Garmin product already on your PC, so the best way to work around that, is to install Garmin Training Centre first.

Then you can install Garmin Mapsource, and it will accept the Training Centre product.

    All legit!
