Hi all,

Just wondering how far your average player hits their drives? I'm a woman and was told 130 mtrs for me... sounds rather short but perhaps on average if you take into account the large number of older players. Also interested to see how much farther men actually hit them!

Brilliant we haven't had one of these threads in a long time.
I'll start the ball rolling, I usually drive about 386 yards on average.

I usually drive about 2.3km, but sometimes I'll get a lift to the course instead

all that said, the guy I played with on Saturday hit it nearly 50m past me on the 17th in Grange.
He was at the 150m marker from the white tee.
I was delighted at being past the 200m.
Thats 465 -150m = 315m, all carry (as it was underground when we found it )
Impressive when it stays on the fairway, smugly amusing when it goes awol as he swings out of his shoes everytime.

I'd reckon I carry it about 200 yds on average and seem to be slightly longer than average compared to most ppl I've played with - but waaay shorter than the big hitters I have played with. I hardly ever hit the fairway though so that's the most important statistic. I can bust the odd one out about 220/230 I'd say but I can also bust one out about 140 which is about as regular as my 220's. :cool:

It all depends on the weather.

I have only measured my carry (not total distance) in the winter when the ball doesn't roll (you can often see the pitchmark close to the ball). I have done this several times and it averaged 230 yards (210 metres).......slightly uphill so the ball almost "plugged".

In the summer however I have no real idea of what my carry is as the ball rolls so much........how would anyone really know unless they had a spotter (most holes you don't really see where the ball actually lands).

I've played enough golf for long enough to know that this would be further than the average male golfer can carry a driver (on average - discounting mi****s).

Edit....I just realised that the last time I did this was several years ago and I was driving with a Great Big Bertha - hmmm I must do it again with my new driver which is longer off the tee.

I've a fairly low trajectory, with a slight fade. Probably carry it 200, 205 and maybe even as far as 225 on a good day. But i also hit the odd high slice that goes 180. hard to shake that off when it starts.

Im in the 225-250 category. Mid trajectory with a draw & hitting a lot of fairways since returning to the game. Something I struggled with as a teen (due to trying to hit every drive 500 yards )

Am In the 200 zone as well. Sometimes more - sometimes less but lately they were going where I wanted so happy with that!

I play with a 21 handicap and he booms the odd one out 300+ in the summer a nice big high draw , but the next could be 50 yards O.B:(

And it needs to be carry and not total distance. 330 yard carry plus roll in the summer.......could be close to 400 yards. That would mean hitting a half wedge to almost all par 4s for the 2nd shot and maybe a 7 iron to most par 5s.

For this thread to be sensible, people need to talk about carry and not total distance. And people need to state that they have measured the carry and not guessed it. I was a bit surprised at how short my carry was but I also checked it with another fairly decent 5 handicap player who is above average length. I must do this again as it must have been over 10 years ago with older technology drivers and balls.

I'm not sure how anyone would calculate their average carry distance in the summer without being able to see exactly where the ball lands. It's fairly easy to do in the winter but the problem is that you loose quite a bit of carry distance on a cold day.

The OP said her carry was 130m and wanted to know how far a man would carry a drive. Well my answer is that most decent men would carry over 200m in winter. Most men would hit a 7 or 8 iron 130m in the winter.
