I have been told that the motherboard is gone on my laptop and basically that it cannot be fixed. I don't understand what the motherboard is to begin with . Nothing was ever done that would have caused this i just want to know how exactly a laptop can just 'break' like that with no explanation. Its a Dell laptop, bout 3 years old and was working properly, then all of a sudden a message was displayed when it was turned on and it froze at that.

The motherboard is what all the components of a computer are connected to. It's the big circuit board that the processor, RAM, Hard Drve, Graphics card etc etc connect on to to make up a computer.
They can suddenly go on older machines, but it could be anything really, it could be the RAM not sitting correctly in the slot, it could be a faulty Hard Drive, it could be the motherboard.

What exactly happens when you turn it on?
